Insuring a 50 year old boat

+1 for GJW on my 47 year old Sabre 27. No survey needed, just the occasional photo and a "self certification"/inventory every few years.

Avocet is 46 this year. We have 3rd party plus "removal of wreck" and legal expenses cover with Navigators & General. £3M 3rd Party cover per "incident" and £15k "removal of wreck for £78. No survey.

thanks chaps, I will have a ring around this week. Having reached 50 not out I gave saga a try first. £250 and out of the water survey. Not going to that one

I'm with them too, but I think they won't cover older than 40?
Which might be a problem for me when the renewal comes up this year.

Ha ha, Saga, Never had a decent price off them or anything. I did get a £100 cheque from them because a call centre worker, was having a bad day, and was rude. I complained, they listened to the recorded call, and agreed.

You don't really know how good an insurance company is until you make a claim. Cheapest is not always best.
I've always insured comprehensively with GJW and claimed twice, the claims were both dealt with very professionally and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
We insure our 1978 Cutless 27 with these guys for about £230 p.a fully comp http://www.nautical-insurance.co.uk/
Always been very helpful, though we've never claimed. The boat had had a survey not long before we got her, and they were happy with a copy of that..
(edited to add fully comp and change the premium amount!)

Another thing to check with any insurer is their cover for singlehanding, which I imagine may apply now and again for you and your Trident; some insurers are stupidly reluctant to cover this, but hide that in the small print unless you actively ask them.

Most of that is commission taken by Saga not the premium for your risk so go direct to Navigators which is a brand of insurer Zurich or other direct insurers .

There's a fixation on low premiums. It would be interesting to hear people's experiences on claims as well.

yes, that is an interesting point. A couple of people have related their experiences on here of that. I am aware of the desirability of striking a balance, but it it is anything like the vehicle insurance market there will be little consistency!

The problem is the vast majority of people never claim and most of those who do have good experiences simply because the claims are relatively minor so are not contested. Disputed claims are not a guide to how well other claims will or will not be met, partly because the dispute is around the specific facts of the claim so not representative of claims in general.

The most important thing to do is read all the terms and conditions so you know what is insured and what is excluded. Most policies are basically the same, but there are variations in some that can be of great significance IF your claim is for that type of loss.

Once you have made comparisons between competing policies, then the lowest premium wins.

I am about to write to CJW and try to get them to extend the cover without survey as it is proving difficult and expensive to get one done in Spain.
I have been with CJW for years and had a fairly expensive claim which they handled in a very considerate efficient manner so +1 for them!

Assuming you mean GJW, give them a call. I did after I was quoted €1140 for an insurance survey by one of the Barcelona surveyors on a 30 year old Furia 332 and they agreed to extend for 3 years over the phone, backed up by an email to confirm.

Sorry, yes GJW !! I have written explaining the situation. As we are a group of owners now we had been looking at all aspects of safety and are going to identify all aspects relating to the boat itself and our sailing procedures. In terms of safety Probably as useful as a survey would be.

Do they ask for regular surveys?
Good question, and no they do not. They also settled a biggish claim, zero quibbling.

I asked about transatlantic, and they said they would want a rigging check (fair enough) and an engine check (odd since I won't be using the engine on the ocean, but use it a lot coastal, near jagged rocks in strong tides, for which no engine check is required..).
