Anyone else's insurance taken a jump? Mine has gone up by 45%. When I asked why they said it was the large amount of claims made by owners in the last two years.

Nope. I had a long chat, admittedly over several glasses of wine, with a chap from one of the big companies then submitted my application through their website.

After a bit of questioning about things like experience and navigation kit I now have insurance that covers me for latitudes 28° north and 67° north and longitudes 12° west and 30° east and includes my dinghy and outboard. All for about £100 more than the last company that limited me to 12 mile offshore unless 'on passage' and no dinghy or outboard coverage.

Who are you with ?

My Westerly is with Topsail. I asked for a quote for the motorboat i just purchased and the wanted over double what i was quoted from 3 other companies. Turns out i got the motorboat insured for just a little more than the Westerly, the mobo is nearly 3 times the value !!

Interesting, Topsail advertise in the Ocean Cruising Club newsletters, a club for people who like long passages to out of the way places. I asked for a quote last year and they really were not interested in single handed sailors. They are now on my list of 'don't bother companies'.

That is basically "true" in that yacht insurance has been unprofitable in recent years because of high claims, particularly weather related. So many insurers are either getting out, merging or changing their underwriting criteria in search of the potentially profitable business.

All is not lost - just accept they don't want your business and get shopping
