Any thoughts/experience on getting insurance cover for long distance singlehanding?

I'm currently with Haven Knox Johnston, who have covered me for singlehanding, night and day, in all European waters, including a circumnavigation of the British Isles. However, they won't cover me for a Transatlantic crossing unless there are at least three on board. I did the rounds at the LBS, but had no luck with anyone there.

Without sparking off any debate about the safety/morality of singlehanding, can anyone help - or will I have to do the trip "self insured"?

try a broker

There are several brokers advertising in YM. You can usually insure anything (especially underwriten at Lloyds) if you are prepared to pay.
A smaller broker may be able to arrange something, they usually give a more personal / tailored service.
Somebody must be insuring single handers, there's enough of them racing around the world?

Have you tried CraftInsure?

CraftInsure advertise in YM and do online insurance only. Don't know whether they'd cover transatlantic, but ordinarily they do cover singlehanded sailing including night-time.

Pantaenius, may be worth considering. They use phrases in their terms and conditions like "....no minimum crew restrictions" and "......no restrictions on hours or distances sailed in a twenty-four hour period".

Tel: 01752 223656
Email: info@pantaenius.co.uk

Hope you find something that is suitable
