currently considering three different types of vehicle and I got some quotes from direct line

just me as a driver 58 and clean license

third party insurance on a vehicale valued at £800

we already have two cars with them - polo and micra

both no claims ever but on the tow vehicle starting from scratch apparently

Disco 2.5 £490

transit 120 2.5 litre £410

Volvo 850 £374

is this in line with your insurance

your reaction to these quotes gratefully received

any suggestions about driving these prices down some-how?

Dylan

Increase voluntary excess

Try and get fully comp quotes. It's not unknown for FC to be cheaper than TP as some insurers regard people who take out TP as more risky.

Try to avoid telling them you have insurance on other vehicles/with other companies.
I have noticed a tendancy for them to quote similar quotes to existing policies for similar vehicles with other companies.
Also try Saga-two years ago got a discounted quote for new policy for 2 litre Citroen Berlingo-£110 comprehensive.
Remember to say low mileage parked off road in garage even if these change in future.

With no claims I geuss the Disco one must be close enough. I've a 53 plate TD5 and with full no claims with the RAC it's about £350. Can't be 100% sure on that, in the North Sea at the moment but it's not far off.

It does have full continental cover as well.

And four named drivers

My Shogun (2004, Elegance DiD 3.2, auto) costs me about £360 a year with a £150 excess and 60% no claims (protected). Its with Privilege. So did my 2006 Santa Fe (2.4 petrol, manual). I swapped to the Shogun as the Santa Fe was fine for towing but it would not pull my boat up even a modest slipway (was about 1800KG-2000kg all up so marginally legal anyway) so launching was get it right first time and recovery was by crane. You don't even know you are towing with the Shogun and with all the toys on the diff gives no problems getting up steep ramps and being auto is even easier. Only downside is the fuel consumption which is around 30mpg in mixed driving being very light footed. I did used to tow with a 2.0 Volvo V70 estate with a slightly lighter load and that really was marginal especially being front wheel drive. Used to dread having to stop on inclines or get caught in stop/start traffic.

Also have our 3 cars with Admiral. All fully comp - C Max, Fiesta and Morgan 3 drivers on Fiesta, 2 on others. Just over £400 the lot.

Are there owners clubs for any of the vehicles, they often have insurance deals which are far better than the normal insurers. My son when under 25 insured a dolomite sprint through the owwners club for less than I could insure an escort with full ncd.

Dont know about the 2 cars, but the Disco looks high. I am in a similar situation, Range Rover DHSE as 3rd car comes in about £400. (0% No claims)

If the Disco is a possible, try Peter Best Insurance. They also do 'Classic' insurance, limit your milage to less than 3000miles per year and they should come in lower.

The only factor i'm unsure about is your employment, is journalism a high risk ?

thanks for your input - all suggestiolns gratefully received.

Officially I am a video editor as it is where I earn most of my money sitting at a keyboard is a very low risk occupation.

might try saga - aaagh!

Try Adrian Flux for the Disco, mine is fully modified for off roading and I pay less than that...

The problem is that you are having to quote with zero no claims bonus. Could you find out which car you currently own has the lowest insurance group (polo or micra) and use the NCB from that policy on the Disco/Volvo/hearse and then insure the cheap car on a new policy with zero NCB.

brilliant plan

absolutely fantastic suggestion

transfer wife and children to the micra and have me as the only driver of the Polo

then I can get a second car under the same policy - should be a lot cheaper

Try the NFU for the land rover.
I think that's who my landy-nutter mate uses.
Speak to a broker like Adrian Flux about limited mileage and mutli-vehicle policies.

FWIW, when I went from one car to two, keeping one in Scotland, it was over £250 for a Mondeo 2 litre.

TPFT is not always cheaper than FC.
The " XYZ Direct " type companies always seem the most expensive.
Recently had some silly quotes for a "down the pub on Sundays sports car" because NCB was on other cars.
Was contacted by a specialist company who had some connection to a big outfit after a quote on a comparision website.
Did some sort of deal using my proper NCB on one of my other cars on the new insurance quote.
The so called multi vehicle companies such as Admiral are a joke, cheaper to insure separately.

Add a named driver of similar age and experience - was astonished to discover that adding my brother to my insurance REDUCED my premium by about forty squids!

The nice chappy on the other end of the telephone reckoned this was commonplace and a quirk of how premiums are calculated

Perhaps they just don't like you. I got full no claims on both cars.

This year Direct Line beat very other quote I got for a single car. About £230 I think it was.

Shop around and run a Dutch auction. They all have introductory discounts to give away.

The value of the car isnt very important. What drives insurance costs are injury claims and the lawyers fees on top of them. One case recently where a guy was made paraplegic by a lad in daddies range rover got £5 million cash and from memory 250k per annum for life. Plus the lawyers 20 to 40% on top no doubt. Just imagine how many new premiums are needed to recover that sort of money
