Insurance Costs - whats your opinion?

You can make a good economic case for a Morgan - if, that is, you can make an economic case for any car. But the trad Morgan doesnt do what a modern sports car should do - just try a Lotus Elise on the road and you'll see what I mean.

But then what chance do we get to drive sportingly these days?

Exactly - I don't want a modern sports car. My ideal would be a Riley Sprite like Mike Hawthorn had. Morgan is closest, same performance from 1.8 and no temptation to go mad as with a V8!

Economics is about minimising lifetime cost so you don't feel guilty about the pleasure. Not that I do because I worked hard to be able to afford it (and have full permission from SWMBO).

(and have full permission from SWMBO).

Thats the key bit. I had to fall off one of my motorbikes to get permission for the Lotus from SWMBO - and then only if I sold the bikes  But it's not the same. In UK traffic the car is no faster really than an old Volvo estate. And on open roads, it's just as much a licence loser as the bikes were.

Sad because I really enjoy the feel of it - the Lotus is very tactile - but I think I will flog it and go flying microlights instead. At least then I can swoop around without worrying about radar traps.

Tried thrashing it round the circuits but somehow that didnt really grab me either.

Does the Moggie come pre-fitted with pipe and slippers?:D:D:D

Thing is, they do reflect the real world - that is they are based on the risk as seen by the insurer supported by their claims record.

Just because you see the world in a different way does not make you right and them wrong! After all it is THEY that are taking the risk, not YOU!

Example. My £25k Morgan costs less than £250 a year to insure with no limitations. Why? because boring old Fs like me who can afford to have such a toy don't have accidents and as it is locked away in a secure garage when it is not in use is unlikely to get nicked. Therefore very low risk very low premium.

OK point taken, I am quite new to sailing & very new to boat owning & it was a bit of a shock to me when the first few quotes I had came back with all these conditions attached. I can now see why most RTW sailors (the ones that I have met & sailed with anyway) are not insured...

What I like about boat insurance is the cost is the same no matter how much the boat is used. So all those boats that are sitting, going nowhere, in marinas are keeping my premiums down.

As for djbreeze - shop around. Pantaenius seem to understand what boats are for, don't apply many restrictions, are reasonable if you want to exceed those restrictions, are not known for quibbling over claims, but are not the cheapest. I'm sure there are others just as reasonable but probably even more who just apply silly restrictions. Saga, for example, having refused to quote 'cos I have the temerity to use a swinging mooring, race, spend too many nights at anchor, sail singlehanded, make passages during hours of darkness, sail west of Brest and probably commit a variety of other sins, keep mailing me with offers to quote.

I find it ironic that having insured with a company that allows me to sail as I wish, the things that have happened that could have given rise to a claim would actually have been covered by the most restrictive of policies. As yet, touch wood, I have never had problems with the things that Saga don't like.

Thanks for the tip, I will give Pantaenius a try...

Pantaenius

Another vote for Pantaenius. This is our 1st year with a yacht and previously I had only owned dingies in Australia. Good quote, 40% discount based on experience, includes racing, single handed, swinging mooring, on water over winter (pontoon) massive area over cover and brilliant this year when something went wrong. Solved all the problems when we had to claim and managed to counter-claim with us coming out with no blame no cost.

Happy, you bet I am.

saving £20 on your insurance premium and having the wrong insurance is a false economy.

I was recommended to try Pantaenius by a marine surveyor, i.e. someone who spends his time dealing with claims involving all insurance companies. I found them competitive, knowledgeable, interested in your real experience not certificates, non restrictive and brilliant to deal with when (unfortunately) I needed to.

Lifesure

Hi all, just got my first boat so new to all this. I tried several companies but found the best quote with Lifesure. I didnt know they did Boat insurance but gave them a try because I also have my caravan insurance with them. Beat my best quote by £30, not a lot but every little helps as tesco say.:)

True, cheap isn't always the best, but you cant tell how good some one is until you have to claim. They use navigators and general though who I have heard good things about on other sites.
