I insured a 1980 boat and they were very pragmatic about the saildrive and rigging.
Just insured a 2002 boat and they had some attitude, sensible but direct.

Claimed for a quite major biff a couple years back with no issues.

I also stipulated an insurance with yacht line, but I have just discovered this clause that leaves me very perplexed:

"1.8.17 Any claims arising during the Laid-Up period 1st November to 31st March, or such other period as may be specified on the Certificate of Insurance where: 1 The vessel was sailing or was otherwise in use. 2 The vessel was not in a marina or securely stored ashore"

Means that if I surf during this period, I am not covered by the policy?

Quite a common clause. You usually tell the insurance company how many months a year you want to be in commission, so if it isn't 12 months a year that usually reduces the premium, but as that clause implies they won't pay out.

Also quite common for an insurance company to specify a boat is ashore or in a marina over the winter.

You can of course get insurance for remaining in commission all year (I do) and I presume even for leaving the boat on a mooring (although I've never tried to get that).

in fact I have the boat insured all year round and in fact I asked for explanations and they replied so, but I do not understand well, they are Italians and I live in Italy:

"Yes as I explained because you are moored within a marina as your normal mooring (Not a swing or other type) you are covered for normal use for the whole of the 12 month period this clause is to stop people who use say a swinging mooring in the summer months from leaving it on the mooring during the winter period, if like you they are warranted marina based you can use your vessel at any time throughout the 12 month period on full cover within your warranties which is that when moored (not if you are using and aboard) it is left in a recognised marina within your navigational limits.

So very basically if you are warranted marina based you are insured to sail all year under full cover as normal"
