Update GJW !

I have recieved a E-Mail today from the Underwriter of GJW regarding total loss /damaged cause by mechanical breakdown,I will try to post this E-Mail ,however they state ( if the vessel sinks, goes aground hits another vessel through mechanical failure you are covered for total loss or any damaged to the vessel, whats not covered is mechanical damage to the engine. he also says no other insurance Co covers mechanical damage.
To obtain this information I asked the Underwriter yesterday to visit this forum and look at the comments.
Hi Stork, As my above post I have been with GJW 6 years got my renewal forms yesterday been carefully going through each exclusion and cannot find any reference regarding mechanical breakdown linked to grounding or sinking, I would have thought that
most grounding plus total lost would be through engine breakdown and being wash onto a lee shore or rocky outcrop,or even a simple breakdown in a crowded marina with a spring tide pushing you into moored boats if not covered for this then the policy
is usless.
I will contact GJW and clarify before renewing , I will post the outcome!

You are not normally covered for the part ( say rigging screw parting) that caused the initial claim

Thanks for the update, good news probably. I have again contacted Ms Griffiths at GJW for her confirmation of the change in GJW Policy terms. My renewal with Y Yacht is due in mid October.

I agree with your sentiments, but level of cover is inportant. I was with GJW for 8 years, but following comments on here I queried with their underwriter their view on consequential losses following mechanical breakdown. Basically they confirmed that grounding or sinking following a mechanical breakdown was not an insured item under their policy terms.

As promised, I contacted GJW on this matter and I have received a definitive reply from Jo Griffiths, Senior Executive at GJW. The delay in the reply is due to Ms Griffiths consulting GJW's Compliance Officer and underwriters before responding

The response is simple - if the engine fails and the boat is grounded or sinks etc this IS covered by the GJW policy

I have had the same response from Ms Griffiths, diametrically opposite to her response to me last year which is why I changed to Y Yacht and why I will remain with them this year.
