Insurance companies that cover winter swing mooring

ask a broker. especially if there is one in Falmouth.

we are insured year round in the water (not the Fal...) however it is a landlocked bay. Sometimes when broker suggests change insurance company, there can be a discussion at the beginning re this point. so far, has not ended in an increased premium.

Hi all,

My son has agreed a price on a 18ft motor boat and secured a swing mooring on the River Fal. However, we cannot find an insurance company that covers winter in-water mooring - they all want the boat ashore overnight: can anyone recommend an insurance company that covers in-water mooring in the winter please ?

For my 3rd party sailing boat insurance with Navigators and General, they don't care if the boat is afloat 12 months a year (I asked them in April as it wasn't explicitly mentioned in the policy document). They must take the view that the main risk is to the boat itself rather than the risk of it coming adrift and being the cause of a 3rd party claim.

As it happens I still take mine out in winter though, but I don't sweat it if I'm the odd week early to launch, or late to haul out.

So I'm pretty sure your son could definitely get 3rd party insurance for the winter afloat. In that case he needs to think carefully about the location (how sheltered etc), the quality of the mooring gear and the realistic likelihood of losing the boat in a winter storm, given that the risk would be all his. Also, if the worst happened, would it be a crippling loss financially or just something sad and unfortunate?

The problem for the OP is that he has been applying online and the algorithms reject any application for insurance on swinging moorings.

Thank you for the intel. The mooring is with Greenbank hotel - looks more sheltered on map view but I don’t know the weather patterns etc - do you think that is sheltered enough ?

That would be fine, it might get lumpy if the wind is in the wrong direction but nothing like fully exposed to a southerly like ours.

Can’t help with insurance tho.

Our insurance via broker is euromarine. They would not insure over winter if below the tamar bridge but ok if on cargreen yc moorings half mile above the bridge

So its not the fal, but where you are on the fal and the security of the mooring

I have 12 months insurance opposite Dittisham on the Dart with Haven Knox Johnston. I used to stay in all year but now come out in the winter and Dart Harbour move other boats to the mooring as it is in a sheltered location. It is in an S bend in the river with little fetch for waves to build up and sheltered from the south by a hill covered in trees.
Location is important as other parts of the river are more exposed and also the moorings at Totnes are vacated in the winter because of debris and tree trunks washed down the river. A long time ago I had damage moored on the Exe when a large ice floe came down from the river into the estuary and removed several moorings.
I would contact the local mooring authorities and see if you can borrow a different mooring for the winter and then try again with the insurers.
