Our boat comes out at least once a year, & I get engines serviced, have it cleaned etc. I also check anodes & fittings myself, & while I'm sure the guys working on her would let me know if they saw anything wrong, none of us probably have the qualifications to spot internal damage to seacocks, for example. Do I need to get a surveyor out every six months ?[/QUOTE
I think you do as much as can be expected of a responsible owner
The problem is that it's quite hard to spot corrosion in a thru hull fitting whilst it's installed hence when commercial boats have there annual mca inspection they ask for a sample of the through fittings & sea cocks to be stripped & inspected
With smaller fittings fitted to the average pleasure boat it is often difficult to remove them without damage to the fitting.
personally I'd rather spend the money I save on insurance removing & replacing a through hull fitting every year for peace of mind. We have 4 through hulls in our boat so I still save money if I replace one fitting a year
I'd rather save money on the insurance & spend it on prevention than sit at home thinking well if the worst happens I have insurance
In the event of a boat sinking even with the best insurance cover available you will always lose out even if it's just your excess. Factor in the hassle you will go through & the inevitable stuff you forget was in the boat & don't claim for then in my mind prevention is better than cure
