Was just looking at the 2K diesel genny for sale on our forum.
I was rather taken by how little space was taken up.
I think that I could find room in my engine room for something that size. ( can anyone comment on the aprox dimensions of the generator out of its frame and excluding the control panel)?
How would an air cooled model get on down below? I suppose I could get the fan to come on when it was running?
I looked up the prices of this size of genny some were around £290 with battery start which seems at bit less than when I looked a couple of years ago?

You have two problems: one the exhaust fumes (only mildly deadly) and the other, the amount of heat produced, which will be in total about 2.6kW at full chat. Some of that will be radiant heat too.

I very briefly! considered an air cooled genny once, but noise and heat made it a no no. Settled on a deck mounted petrol one, a bit quieter and no heat, fume problem.

Just done the same and purchased a little honda suitcase genny to run 240 volts and a small heater if its nippy on board. Seemed the easiest option rather than install heating tubes though every cabinet and bulkhead, especially as we won't need it during the summer.

Just installed a 4.2 KVA diesel generator based on and old ferymann directely connected to a 2 pole alternator.

Ferymann is water cooled with a wet exhaust.

IMHO the only way to go if fitted below deck is water cooled otherwise too much heat and noise and problems with ducting cooling air to engine.

Thanks guys, another 'good idea' ruined by your excellent advice!!
The installation shown in the for sale forum did look neat but I guess the job has to be done properly ie water cooled and 'plumbed in'.
I do use one of the small 'B7Q' 800w Jobbies for power tools, emergency charging etc, it works well and sat on the afterdeck is not too intrusive. I would have liked a bit more output, say 2k but think that this would not be so easy to lug around on board?

Having just bought a Honda EU20i, and having carted it around the boat looking for somewhere to store it in the short term, I can confirm that, whilst not lightweight, it's not too difficult.
