Does anyone know if a quote of 1,700 GBP for the installation of an electric upgrade of a Lewmar 40, and a quote of 4,000 GBP for that of a windlass is normal? It's on a 36 foot Dehler.
I prefer not to do these myself but these costs are huge.

I have just installed a Loframs Cobra, like all jobs on a boat it took a lot longer than I thought. The cable is the most expensive bit, I think around £400 in all and that was not tinned, then there are the switches and a circuit breaker, so all in all about £600 for materials. I'm guessing, but I would have thought a boatyard would be able to fit one in a couple of days, so labour would be around £600/£800 plus the cost of the windlass, and calibrated chain if needed.

As you may have seen, I am looking at a similar operation. I already have an electric windlass but here is a sheet giving the costs for converting a winch. (excluding labour)

Here you go. Installation of windlass as per below, the ranges provided are due to range provided in different quotes.

+ 2 x foot switches @ £20 each
+ Switch at cockpit £20
+ Circuit breaker £20 to 75
+ Control box £65*
+ 50mm cable £150
+ Consumables £50*
+ Labor £390 to 920
+ hawse pipe £45*

Excluding the windlass and chain price ranged from £780 to 1,365 ex VAT.

* these items were not included in all quotes

pm if you need more info.

...and not everyone was equally responsive in following up on a quote through to installation... it may be that there is too much work to go around for all the yards :-) ??

With all the bends and twists you will do well to get cable for £150, even if you use welding quality. The OP is going to need about 16/18 metres, cut into 5 pieces, lugs crimped on, and shrink sealed.

That is exactly the sort of labour cost I expected. To clarify my mail : I was quoted 2,000 GBP for the windlass itself (that's in a sense ok as I assume it is the list price from Lewmar), but 4,000 GBP for labour.

splutter splutter cough cough..... £4k for installation only!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone in a yard somewhere has more work than they need right now if they are quoting a ridiculous price like that!
