We have a jeanneau with selden inmast finding problems getting the main out , sail was inmast all winter and due to work our season has just started , any suggestions appreciated .

Has the furling gear been lubricated recently? It needs regular servicing for best results. Full instructions are on the Selden website if you haven't got the manual.

There are greasing points under round covers on port side of mast below the reefing drum/winch and another point (a hole) at the very top of the mast. plus the swivel (also at top). However, I'd bet that the problem is with the sail and that grease won't help.

Jeanneau owners web-site had several mentions of sudden problems after a few years. Most seemed to be due to creasing and bagginess of main. Obviously a bad idea to leave the main up over the winter, perhaps it has trapped moisture and so the material is more likely to stick.

I'm afraid that I can't suggest much to help apart from trying a winch handle on the fitting at base of the mast to rock the sail in/out slighty. This might give some feel for the bearings and whether grease would help. Apart from that, it's probably a matter of pulling the outhaul out and perhaps winding in again with multiple repetitions. Hopefully making some more progress each time.

Perhaps someone else has a better suggestion.

Can be one of two things as already suggested. If it is a creased furl then winding in tight before pulling out usually frees it. When you get it out, refurl in accordance with the Selden instructions and you should not get creases. However if the sail is really old and baggy could be time for a new sail. Make sure the reefing drum is on "free" and the reefing line if you have one is uncleated.

Thanks guys , I have the main out but it's a hell of pull

We too have Selden in mast furling.
It would appear that next to thought has gone into the servicing of the bearings. Ok you can grease the beveled gears as it says in the instructions, but the bearings are nigh on impossible to get to. Unless I'm missing something.
We have had to use the continuous line to get our sail out for the past 3 seasons, unlike when it was new.

Thanks dougg , sounds like same problem , we are a 2011 boat , using the loop line seems to work rather than the main outhaul
