Injector cleaner?

Just got back yesterday from a 700 km trip to get a TV fixed (Don't ask).

I filled up the tank before leaving and added enough injector cleaner for 2 tank fulls, should have read the label first, never mind.

As I left in the early hours of the morning I drove at reduced speed to avoid the fur coated fender benders, Kangaroos to you.

As soon the sun showed I drove at the legal limit, well most of the time anyway.

Waited 4 hours for the repair and filled the tank again noting the amount of fuel and distance travelled.

Headed home a lot faster and cut almost 30 minutes off the trip back. I filled up on arrival and again noted distance travelled and fuel used.

I was amazed to see that despite the extra speed and the fact that I was driving into the wind heading south I used less fuel.

So the injector cleaner had some effect. Also note the vehicle is a Toyota Hiace 6 Van, a bit like a brick, it often runs several hundred Km per week so the extra economy was not due to a good blow of a run.

How did you establish that it cleared partly blocked injectors?

There are at least three traps in that question . . .

In one instance, a Granada 2.8i I bought at auction had a top speed of about 60mph. I diagnosed the problem as blocked/partially blocked injectors by extracting one injector at a time, running the engine, and examining the spray pattern. Four of the six injectors had bad spray patterns (in the worst case, dribbling/dripping instead of spraying). Two tanks of petrol and two bottles of STP later - problem completely solved. (btw, I don't work for STP and I'm not in the motor industry.)

I'm interested in the cellulose thinners suggestion, having big engines that tickover a lot (and smoke a lot too) I strongly suspect glazed bores but this does sound a bit too good to be true. I've always been a bit nervy over putting neat cleaner into the fuel filter in case it over does things and something goes bang that should not.

Put the cellulose thinners in the fuel but not more than 5%, any more may give preignition. There is no harm in a few gallons of mix being used but I don't think it would be wise to use it all the time. ;)

This sounds like the old 'add 3% Acetone to diesel powered Ford Transits' threat on the UK Tranny site I read years ago.

The diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder once the correct point in the cycle is reached. Before that the cylinder contains only air so can't ignite.
