I am going to move a 38ft motor cruiser with a draft of 3ft beam of 12 ft I am leaving Southampton and I want to get to the midi what is the best route to take The boat has a big square wheel house and I hear that there are some low arched bridges I have 3 weeks to move this boat once at the midi I want to leave the boat there and use it 4 or 5 times a year and can you leave it tied to the side of the canal or are there dedicated mooring to leave it and would anyone know if the rates are reasonable
Many thanks

Airdraft in the Canal du Midi is 3m. If less than that you have three alternatives

First, favoured by Yotties is around the French Coast to Bordeaux then into the system.

Second, in to the North/South canals on the Channel coast, usually Le Havre and eventually to the Rhone and then either the canal network along the coast or outside in the Med to Sete.

Third road to somewhere convenient on the Med coast such as Port St Louis then into the system at Sete.

There is just masses of information about the inland waterway systems, books, official French publications, magazine articles websites etc to help you on your way.

Good source to start is a site maintained by a forumite www.michaelbriant.com Excellent source and links to other sources.
