In my quest to find something that will edit the "Quicktime Motion JPEG" that my camera produces I have come across which may be of interest to some of you http://www.lightworksbeta.com/

The question is is it really as good as it seems usable by the average bod (without a PHD) & really as good & practical as Windows Movie Maker which seemed quite wonderful to me?

I've played with it - it is really good and can do some awesome things (The King's Speech was edited using it). It's a level above Windows Movie Maker but does work well.

I downloaded it after seeing it recommended in Computer Active.
To me, it seems almost totally incomprehesible, so I'm sticking to WinLMM for now.
Is there a help file for Lightworks?

Aren't there other magazines - and forums - for this sort of stuff?

Gitoutov'ere!

Many of us like to make films of our acts of daring do.... & the nature & the scenery so it is appropriate to sailing.Granted it is not as exciting as talking endlessly about brass & it's decomposition in the sea water environment...& the inability of some people to take that message onboard

Works very like Final Cut Pro or Premiere. As with most prosumer Non-Linear Editors, the initial learning curve is steep, but once there you can do some awesome stuff.

Why not convert the Mov to AVI?

There are convertors available.

A free one Here. I haven't used it. But have used others for different conversions.

I tried converting & either found it difficult or could'nt do a direct conversion between Quicktime Motion JPEG & something usable....or maybe just realized that it would be a step down in quality because Windows Movie Maker dos'nt cater for HD?........+ I find that the timeline often freezes when using ordinary AVI.(I suspect that I hav'nt got enough RAM on my computer). The funny thing is that I can watch the Quicktime Motion JPEG perfectly alright using the VLC Media Player

Has anyone actually downloaded this software? I've tried five times now and never got beyond 5% before it stopped; the 5 % was after several hours as well.

I've downloaded and tried to use but the main issue is, as with most free software, and some commercial is the limitation on the file format's it can handle.
My raw material is in.m2ts (wrapper for .mp4 or AVCHD) and I'm struggling to find a converter that can handle it without serious quality degradation. The converters I've tried put horizontal lines in and in one case lost the sound half way through the clip.

I'm currently using Powerdirector 9 - It's awesome for the money. There's an Ultra version if you have a really new quad core computer and 64bit operating system which would make it even better.

Most open source software will handle a hell of a lot more wrapper and codec combinations than free software.

MPEG2 Transport Stream is widely used (Freeview, Freesat etc.) so loads of converters exist. (it's not a wrapper format for .mp4 - that is another wrapper format entirely). VLC will do it easily without transcode.

My personal editor of choice for non-work projects (Kdenlive) will handle AVCHD in an .m2ts and AVC in a .mp4 file without needing to transcode.

I thought you were on to something there with VLC. I managed to convert .mpg ->.mp4 not the most perfect of results but watchable.
Tried converting .mts to mp4 and nothing...got a 2Kb file of 0 length.
I have found that changing the deinterlace setting in VLC improves tha playback quality.
