recently I have had increased compression on my Yanmar 1GM10 - so much now that I can hardly turn by hand without releasing compression. Runs as smoothly (!) as ever and power the same as ever (!).

possible headgasket and/or water from inlet? any other suggestions?

if it's happened without taking the head off there aren't many things it could be. my guess would be that sticking piston rings have come free, perhaps as a result of different oil. valve seats could also be involved.

Thats the way it should be , like snowleopard has said must be because the oil is better or a ring has freed itself.
How many hours has the engine run ?
How old is it ?

Always use mineral oil.
NOT SYNTHETIC or SEMI SYNTHETIC
