Look, I may well be at fault here so I will put it to the wisdom of the forum to decide.

Over winter in this marina there is a large liveaboard community. The marina is in the Med.
Each morning at 0900 there is a radio net with the usual weather, items for sale, help, social activities. This is on a non working channel.
Now I like to bring a little bit of humour to the net so yesterday I said

"On this day In 1872 the Australians invented the condom, using a sheep’s bladder.

On this day In 1873 the British somewhat refined the idea by taking the bladder out of the sheep first".

Today at the beginning of the broadcast we were told that the net could be heard up to 25 miles away so we should not make jokes, sexual or racial references and stick to only the essentials.

To me someone has a sense of humour failure but it may well be me who's wrong.

what do you think?

I think its a little strong for broadcast over the public airwaves, some will be offended. Okay for the rough 'n tumble of our local pub bar though. The other idea is to use the low power (1w) button on the vhf.

Look..seems I was wrong... I best hold my hands up and shut my mouth.
What happened to a sense of humour or is everyone only allowed to tell a joke if they go to the top of Ben Nevis and whisper whilst looking over their shoulder.
It makes you want to leave the country... Oh I already have...
Well at least I can offer Adrian Childs a bunk...

What frequency are you using? Marine VHF? I can't imagine there is any place in europe where that use of the marine band is not against the rules - get everyone to buy a PMR446 radio and you can do pretty much what you want.

I did chuckle reading that, I guess it all comes down to "there's a time and a place". Perhaps squeeze an open mic adults evening into the organised weekly activities schedule :)

Are there people who actually tune in to the morning net everyday??

Appears I am the only one with a sense of humour.. there would be me and 10 others who would all be doing a recital of Romeo and Juliet... then again someone would object to a suicide pact.

Funny thing, humour. Doesn't always travel well, or translate well. It's definitely a cultural thing and not all countries have the same things they laugh at. Brits seem to think they have the monopoly on humour and point to the popularity of humorous films and TV abroad. They certainly like to inject something funny into every conversation, love to be the 'life and soul of the party'. So many other nationalities are lambasted for their so-called lack of humour ... I disagree, it's just different.

One thing I've noticed in a relatively long life and residence in many lands and a modest degree of multilingualism; British humour relies heavily on sexual innuendo, which many others do not. Funny, that.

I would have thought it was more a case of objecting to inappropriate use of licenced radio frequencies - as I said above, PMR446 is intended for these purposes and you can get away with murder there.

You might want to re-read the conditions you signed up to on your radio license.

I don't know what you mean by "non-working channel". The only non-working channel is Ch16 - unless you mean a no-longer utilised public correspondence channel?

Either way, not appropriate.

I'll join you. Good racist jokes involving healthy bestiality keep the world a fun place.
Did any sheep complain?
