---I gather this comes with the radar dome for the price???

when importing goods from the US you will be charged VAT which you will have to pay on receipt unless the seller pays it for you as part of the deal.

some US mail order companies like West Marine do so much business in europe that they have a simple mechanism for sorting out the duty.

You'll be charged VAT at 17.5% on the cost of the item and the cost of the postage. Import duty will be 4% on this amount. The carrier will charge a customs clearance fee of around a tenner.

THere is some contention as to whether the UK importer of JRC products (Marconi Marine) will honour a warranty claim on a radar imported directly from the US.

I believe the US spec JRC radars come with 10m cables as opposed to the 15m one supplied with the UK items.

Very nearly imported one of these myself but eneded up buying a Furuno 1623 for only a few quid more at the Southampton BS. Concerns over the UK warranty caused me to bottle out.

Your delivery will probably be from Federal Express.

They will charge you the duty, clearance charges and the VAT. For electronics from the US the all-in extra came to 24.8% on the ACR EPIRB I imported.

The invoice came to me direct and delivery actually took place before I'd settled.

I'm afraid the saving may be less than you think.

I asked a similar question recently and was convinced by the forum that the savings are a lot less in the end. It seems if you search carefully you can source UK kit and have the after care associated with it for not much more than the total price of importing it. I was asking specifically about the Raymarine C series- it turned out I hadn't looked hard enough for the best UK prices and there were far better deals to be had. Still haven't got it yest as a significant chunk of the cash has gone on SWMBOs Christmas present.

I would be very surprised if you would not also get into trouble for using a uncertified radio transmitter (a.k.a no CE proof). So it would be illegal to use on a UK vessel.

Ive imported things several times,as i couldent find what i wanted hear, and the price is better there. I found that depending on the price the charges and administration just arnt worth it. One example i ordered somthing in New york, i specified delivery by US post to a customs office. It was sent so, but DHL took the parcel as it had the conssesion

Their handeling charges were in percent terms about 15% plus the shipping, then they charged me tax, we have to pay that, but they added four different tax charges, when i went to the customs office it had been intened to be collected from, Three of the taxes indeed exist but instead of 5.5% 9.6% and 11% charged the real tax level was 0%!!! fantesy taxes and i bet the most just pay--ever tried contacting any of the new private post deliveres??? cant!
In the end i reterend the invoce changed an stamped by the customs with my cheque for the "new charges"
That cost me one and a half days to sort out. Never again in future ill get on a plane an go get what i want!!

I think the exchange rate is even more favourable now...
