Johnson recommend glycerine and nothing else to lubricate the impeller, supplied with the kit along with a new gasket.

Silicone grease is much better than glycerine but it is also a lot more expensive .... and hence glycerine receives Johnson's approval.

Yes, but according to the supplier they will only run dry for 8 minutes longer than a normal impeller. Not sure that is worth the extra cost to me.

It would if you thinned the legs down - I bought one a couple of months ago and they appear pretty good quality for the price

I did think about buying a couple and milling the legs down when I read this thread
