Hi this morning whilst changing the fuel filters I noticed that there is a drip coming out of one of the small square holes at the rear of the impeller housing.
Please could someone give me advice on what has caused this and a solution to fix it?

Many thanks for any opinions given.

Jon

the seal at the back of the pump is on the way out. better to change it before it gets worse and sea water knackers your alternator
they cost @ £2, (volvo part 827247 I think) easy to change. cover the alternator with a plastic bag to try and prevent sea water getting in when you pull the pipes off the pump. take the rubber pipes off, block the water sea water supply pipe with a suitable plug/bung/rag/squishy foam ball, take the impeller cover off, impeller out, take the pump and rubber drive thingy off (2 bolts) back plate out, tap the shaft out towards the back with a plastic hammer, (make a note of its original position). Check which way around the seal goes before you push it out (it matters!) and make a note!
long screwdriver up the inside to push the old seal out.
inspect the shaft once its out - if its got a significant groove worn in it time for a new one.
press new seal in by hand - keep it nice and parallel as it goes in, you might need to tap it fully home with a suitable drift to get it right in. smear bit of grease on shaft put it back in and tap it home, etc etc.

there are two seals -one to protect the bearings further in, and keep the engine oil in the engine, however you need to take the bearing assembly out to do that and that is not always easy- potential for more harm than good without a press etc. Changing the primary one should keep you sealed for years.

PS buy a few seals, when you have fixed the leaking pump, if you have 2 engines do the other one while you have all the tools out - it won't be far behind.

Is it wise to use a new impeller or use the old one if it appears to be in good condition?
Jon

do you know when it was last changed? if you really don't know may as well change it for a new one and keep the old one as a spare. Always handy to have spare impellers.
I tend to keep mine @ 3 years then put a new one (original volvo)

I have been changing impellers annually so perhaps have been wasting my money.
Are aftermarket impellers no good?
Are jabsco impellers better than VP - bearing in mind the pump is made by jabsco?

Morning all - I am getting ready for replacing the seal tomorrow and gathering up tools etc.
does anyone know what the internal diameter of the the pipe is that goes the the housing so that I can bung it to prevent water flooding the engine bay.

Is it just the one pipe I need to bung up ? where does the water go after the impeller housing ? is there a return pipe I need to bung up ?

many thanks so far the replies

Thank you H20 - that's a good write up to do the whole job.
I am just going to change the seal before the bearings as suggested by Kashurst (post 2 of this thread)
However I will bear in mind in the future.

Hi - As a end of weekend update - I took my time doing this job and all has gone smoothly.
My first point was to ensure I didn't flood the engine bay so I looked and removed the strainer so I could match up a suitable socket with duck tape over the square hole end and used it to plug the hose using the existing jubilee clamp - So I removed the impeller housing and plugged that hose with very little spillage.

I removed the impeller which I inspected and was in really good condition and was as good as my spare new one so I reused it - I then changed out the seal and put the whole lot back together.
cleaned the strainer whilst it was off and the mating face of the timing cover (there was slight corrosion) - once finished started the engine and all seems good so far.

Many thanks for the help and advice

Jon
