Impeller gasket

I think if Paul doesn't like the message he shoots the messenger (In this case google).

My Son is a heavy diesel fitter and I raised the subject with him. He says rarely uses grease on a paper gasket but he would always follow the manufacturers directions. (I suppose he has to otherwise he would leave himself wide open to a possible claim for damages)

Common sense would tell you never to use grease on any paper gasket (or other gasket) that gets hot - (the engine and cooling system)

Nothing to do with shooting anyone, you (as usual) dream up some ridiculous theory, then scour Google to find something that might support said theory. In this case, high pressure flange fittings, which couldn't be more removed from the subject of this thread.

Using your "common sense" what do you suppose will be the problem with using grease on the raw water cooling pump gasket ?

How hot do you think that pump will get (baring in mind all it's doing is pumping cold seawater) ?

What about the grease in sealed waterpump bearings (the ones in the actual cooling pump) ?

Duh!

Dear Marje,

I don't think I've ever put grease or anything else on a raw water pump paper gasket, and I've never had a problem, but I wouldn't hesitate to use a bit of grease as a temporary adhesive to help hold it in place while fitting in the unlikely event it were needed.

Does this make me a wishy-washy liberal, and/or someone that everyone in both entrenched camp thinks is so very wrong? :D
