BTW. I am not advocating that we treat the scroungers for any other country any different from how I would treat the scroungers of this country. The only difference is we can't send our own scroungers back home, and no one esle would have them!!

As I understand things, asylum seekers are not allowed to undertake paid work or any economic activity until their status is determined. This actually precludes qualified people from practising skills in scarce labour areas eg healthcare.

You'll always get exceptions, but economists generally argue that refugees and economic migrants create wealth in the UK. However the way that a lot of asylum seekers are treated is shameful and contrary to our supposed tradition of "fair-play" - take a look at http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/35087.html:

Is it really necessary for people to be humiliated in this way?

I am pleased that in this particular case the children have been well supported by hundreds of their fellow pupils at Drumchapel High School.

And then there is Janitor John whose first job when arriving in the uk was to scrub the urinals of approx 100 pubs per week. For his first six months here, he shared a room in a nasty hostel in Earls Court with eleven others. He bought a manky old PC and reskilled himself as an IT guru and hung up his marigolds. He now owns seven flats in SW London. Immigration works and the UK benefits from the likes of this sort of immigrant. Janitor John now pays more tax than your average management level employee.

Who in this country is desperate enough to scrub your cigarette butt laden piss-trough's?

John I worked at KP wow seen enough dirty crappers to last a life time. Soon graduated to production line. This was the first PAYE job I got in England only left the computer one because I wanted to do things properly. I am forever gratefull to the Iraqi guy who was the only one who would give me a break even though he was exploiting me. He understood what it was like to be a non contributing member of a household and took me on even though I suspect he did not realy need another employee.
I employ a lot of people now and allways fall for the hard luck story even though it sometimes bights me in the ass.

As I said, fantastic, lets be choosy and keep the good people and send the scroungers back to France each handcuffed to one of our home grown scroungers.

If they add no value to the country and do not deserve to be here by birth right send them home. What is so wrong with that?

And what good are we doing to their own countries if as you say they are all well educated and trained? Must be a bit like our NHS with lots of our doctors and nurses getting trained here then buggering off to pastures new to make a killing (pardon the pun).

Carry on like this and our colonial history will still be haunting us in another 100 years. We'll get blamed for raping all these countries of their "intellectual wealth".

I don't know the answer to immigration but I know it's not to just let anyone in without some kind of payback. I know lot's of immigrants will contribute to the well being of this country, it's the ones who won't I don't want to be paying for.

Unexpected it may have been for the family, but I would have a bet that someone from Immigration tipped off the press. In exactly the same way that the press are always around when the police make early morning arrests.
 
You're right,

But it gets worse.

While waiting for a decision on asylum application the asylum seeker is eligable for benefits, but, as you say, cannot work.

If asylum is granted he is still eligable for benefits but receives a Nat Ins number and then can seek work, ie he becomes a jobseeker.

If asylum is refused then all benefits cease. No Nat Ins number so cannot (legally) do a job.

If he comes from a country where he may be persecuted on his return he cannot be deported.

So what does he do - No benefits, no job, no money from any legitimate source - a complete mess. Some (perhaps the ones Barry has problems with) turn to petty crime. At least in custody the are fed and housed. Some rely on the generosity of friends. Many simply disappear into the black economy - like cockle picking in Morecambe Bay.

I know of one case where a young man became so depressed and frustrated that he went round smashing windows simply to get arrested - and get a decent meal.

The system is absolutely crazy.
