Just had the immersion heater in the calorifier fail (after some 25 years of use) so it needed replaced.

First problem was getting the old one out - not so difficult with the proper tools - immersion heater box spanner, steel drift and a 4lb club hammer. The box spanner had a cutout in one of the flats allowing a steel drift to catch the spanner to give it a shock with the club hammer to break it loose (soaked in plusgas for 2 days prior to removing) anyway it came out easily without damaging the tank.

Next problem was to find a replacement - needed a 2kW version - plenty of 3kW versiona available but had to search for 2kW versions. After searching this forum came up with a number of suppliers of such creatures - nearly had another heart atack at the prices - £50~£100. "Bugger that" says I and contacts the OEM (Heat Rod) Spoke with a very pleasent chap called Alan in sales - £31.20 + delivery - "OK" says I seeing as the original lasted 25 years - problem - not in stock - 3 days delivery - Ooops maybe not such a good price - Chap asks when I need it - "Yesterday" says I - "OK" says he - "let me check something and call you back"

5 mins later he calls back and says "OK for tomorrow morning delivery, we have the elements in stock and we will make one for you today and dispatch this evening" - That is what I call service AND they were the cheapest I could find for the same spec of heater. Price included dual action stat.

Seems they manufacture a range of wattages and thread sizes and are happy to supply one offs to Joe public (unlike a couple of other places I contacted).

Still having a problem understanding why a 3kW one is only £12

Anyway a result - no association - just a very satisfied customer. :D

Bookmark their site Heat Rod - could save you £££s if (when) you are looking for a replacement immersion heater.

Jeez - 100 views and not one comment :o - I was sure someone would come along and say I had paid too much and I could have got one cheaper and quicker from ............

I need to find out the size of my (non-working) heater. How long is your one? :)

Of course it could be the thermostat, not had to chance to test it yet.

I don't like to boast but I have an 11" one complete with a 2¼ BSP thread and built in adjustable dual action stat.

Does not matter thought as the manufacturer linked to in my original post can make a heater to a range of custom lengths and in a range of wattages.

Chap to talk with is a lad called Alan Rix - extremely helpful and obliging

And I just bought one of these from toolstation for 4 beer tokens and some smash and that crowd wants 17 beer tokens (plus smash) for what looks like the same thing.... Welcome to rip-off Britain.

It's a good price for something custom built - the 3kw ones are manufactured by the millions and fit every domestic tank so there's considerable economy of scale here! Just such a shame that other things "nautical" can't be sourced at a good price.

Rob.
