I'm utterly unspeakably fed up with this...

I have a similar problem with a jabsco pumpguard filter for the shower drain pump. 2 hours and an arthritis friendly dometic cap remover finally did the trick even though only lightly tightened after the previous battle, have used silicon grease this time so time will tell. access to use a tool is a pita as ever.

Fit a large diaphragm pump instead!
?

Little need for a shower drain filter then
Pump is aJabsco diaphragm one, not sure of model but from around 1986/7. local marine engineers said still use a filter 'just in case'. It is always hair and occasional bits of paper towel that clog the screen, easy to clean IF you can undo the filter top, mostly because of tight access in bilge through a hanging locker floor. Easy for a trained monkey with strong grip, not so for arthritic old wrinkly.

I have large diaphragm pumps (not sure if they’re Jabsco) and not had a problem and no filters, it all goes out to sea from shower or into holding tank from loo from a hand pumled Jabsco and out to sea from another big diaphragm pump.
I know it’s risking things to say I’ve not had a problem... yet!

I made the situation much better by buying some o rings (Not oem) and putting a new one in annually.
There is no room for a better strainer so I carry a spare.

electric diaphragm pumps or hand pumps?

The lid on our Vetus raw water strainer has stuck again but this time it's personal. Me, SWMBO, the Harbourmaster and the engineer and a big Gaitor couldn't shift it. It's done it before so lots of silicone grease is in there. The thing is it was slightly funny but what about when we pick up some plastic off a lee shore? The stupid thing is one of those with a big plastic cross thing on top. Someone please tell me that there's a better design? This ALWAYS ******** jams stuck but nothing will move it now so a new design is needed.

Suggestions please!
Silicon grease / vaseline - kept me going for over 20 years on this bit of kit. Sometimes the vacuum does not set, as you know, so re grease but don't over tighten - pressure is not the answer, sealant is.

Best,

PWG

Does anyone have the dimensions so that I can make a spanner?
Just make the paddle board and cut four quadrants, take them to the boat along with some screws, hand drill and bits then assemble on site!
You can tart it up when you get home to look like nolex's in #49.

PS Doing it that way means that you can get the orientation of the handle to the strainer X at the correct angle to your access point.

I was reading this thinking at least mine was ok and never sticks, thought Id just check though and could not believe it - stuck fast! Ended up breaking it trying to release it with a strap wrench.
Got a new replacement this afternoon. Will be making that plywood spanner tomorrow.
