seems quite normal in the world of wooden boats /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif spent yesterday stripping old paint ready for treating and now the weather's flipped /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I'd never looked at 'the lounge' before. Now I have and it is pretty grubby, isnt it? What's it for? This is quite a specialised set of fora, on the whole, and thats why we like it - it's good for varnishy, stainlessy, bronzy types of chat. Geeky, let's be honest. So why do we have the rantylounge? Close it, in Mirelle's memory, and lets all talk about how heinous a ply subdeck is....
It's actually there to try and limit the ammount of ' grubby ' stuff that would otherwise end up elsewhere , and a lot of what goes on is actually helpful , just not boatie
and what's wrong with ply anyway , my latest is entirely ply and I'm proud of her
I´m new to this forum but have found it worthwhile to keep coming back - largely due to the quality of contributors, yourself included.
Others have said it, and let me add my own view. I am also of mixed race - mother Chinese, father English. My wife is Indian. I live in Spain. There are racists everywhere, we all hold prejudices, and yes it´s upsetting to be on the receiving end of it. But such people only show their ignorance... I have always found the small slips that people make to be the most revealing.
I too have not read the thread, and can´t be bothered, my time is precious.
Mirelle, have just read the thread and cant agree with you more but please don't leave. Having just found the forum i would be saddened if they won. However much we despise the views of these people we must remember that at least we live in a comparatively free society and people do have the right to their opinions. So lets stand up and be counted and post our point of view so we can drown these people out.
as you quite rightly say we are all entitled to our points of view. however how you can have a point of view about something without even reading the context is quite beyond me.
but I wont call you a bigoted racist for jumping to conclusions about a point of view through hearsay - you are entitled to put your point of view about anything as we all are.
Probably the most disgusting, racist comment I have ever seen!

it might surprise you, but the first quote was made by mirelle, the latter by another well respected forumite
both are entitled to their points of view - but in your self proclaimed wisdom and apparent neutral position (as you have not even read the thread) which side of the fence do you sit on ?
yeah - thought so /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
How wonderfully out of context! Mirelle was quoting the BNP as perhaps an apt reference to the original poster. I have read the thread, and will back him 100%. He also has the principals to stand resolutely by his beliefs.
I have read the"Am I a racist" thread and on balance I respect the original poster for having the nerve to ask the question of himself.
The question that he asks is perfectly legitimate and intelligent - I dont think that he claims any sort of superiority over anyone else, just admits to a feeling of difference.
The response that he got from Mirelle is insulting and ill considered - I think Mirelle should have stopped and thought a little longer about the wider philosophical question instead of insulting (amongst others) the good people of Norway(??) and calling people scum.
I'm disappointed at the number of people on this thread who respond by saying (effectively) " I havent bothered to read the facts but you're absolutely right Mirelle"
if you have read the thread you will note I also agree with mirells semantics but not the way they were expressed, nor the assessment about the bnp link.
the quote was not out of context but illustrates the depth of feeling voiced in the discussion about the opening statement on that thread - that a massive increase in immigration to western europe could unsettle the area more than global warming.
I suggest if ppl want to comment further, ppl read it and comment on that thread in the lounge as opposed to spilling it over to this forum.
however - as usual, ppl will probably do as they please, where they please, and say what they want regardless.
Agreed. This is not the place for this discussion, and yes I did note you agreed with Mirelle's semantics. The post did get very heated, but this type of topic is bound to have that effect.
I understand, but please don't go. Your help and advice is so valuable. After all, if you go and people who think like you, then the whole forum will be dominated by the idiots - they will give boaters a bad name - they will have won!
I responded to a previous "Am I racist"-type thread, and the original poster made me so mad, I fumed all day, and decided to avoid the Lounge from then on. I do occasionally go back, but avoid any suspect posts.

Well, he should feel really welcome after that. Well done.

oops - is it a small slip on my part /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I did mean welcome to the forum (and welcome to the fray if dipping ones foot into the pool of controversy)
query - why comment on a thread without reading it , especially when the comment is somewhat controversial ?
I did read the thread and am confused why
1.a blanket condemnation,
2. tacit support for a reaction to,
3.plus an assertion of proclaiming racism is rife in the forums
was made by someone who has not even read the context he/she is commenting on - and it goes unchallenged, and is apparently acceptable by others.
comon - this forum might be a cobwebbed corner of stoic determination to preserve old fashioned values in geriatric boats, lets hope one does not act like a blinkered codger sitting in a seaborne allotment shed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Absolutely. Please close the shed door - quietly - on your way out. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
