I\'m in a State of Shock

Earlier this year one of our members had an "incident" with another boat resulting in the need for me to replace the splash board on one of our launches. This required me to order a piece of timber 8' x 12" x 1" and I mistakenly asked for Teak.

I just recieved the bill?

180 quid!!!!

Now I know why the AWB's are done out with teak faced ply, gezzs I got to go lay down<s>

I think 12" now counts as a "wide board", and as such is charged (considerably) extra. Unplaned waney edge stuff can be quite a bit cheaper, if you can use it.

Of course it's expensive. It doesn't grow on trees you know!

Re: I\'m in a State of Shock

I tried to find marine grade Teak faced ply last year - an 8'x4' sheet was going to cost in excess of £100.

Needless to say I haven't bought it - I'm still open to realitically priced supplies of Teak veneer, I'll do the rest myself as I need it.

Regards, jeff.

AWB's - teak faced ply? Not the Jens we investigated at LBS. We went aboard one identical to what we have chartered for our holiday later in the year.

Teak coloured plastic is about the best description for it.

Re: I\'m in a State of Shock

I'm in the process of renewing the cabin sole throughout my Hunter 34 so I ordered some teak and holly veneered, 1/2 inch ply from a place in Florida - cost for 4 4'x8' sheets -$720 BUT then add $240 shipping and about $300 import duty and I'm looking at $325 a sheet! As you can imagine, I'm being very careful with cutting it up and intend to find uses for any 'scrap' I can.

Re: I\'m in a State of Shock

I renewed mine with 1/2" teak glued onto 3/4" exterior grade ply, well epoxied on the edges and underneath, witn black Sikaflex in the gaps. She's a heavy displacement boat so the weight does not matter, but the advantage is that each Spring I just go over the floorboards with a belt sander and they look like new, but are very non-slip. Cost was rather less...

Re: Aeolus

Thanks Ken, I'll follow that up - I was looking earlier last year and after the shock had pretty much given up looking.

Regards, Jeff.
