Re: I\'m getting irritated by the MBY advert

I have done and it's working but I don't beleive this is a pop-up, more of a banner headline. As I suggested earlier, why dont they just run it on the ybw home page and not on the others.

Okay, now we\'re talking the sub?

I think we have a couple of issues here.

When people start talking pop-ups we in fact assumed that they were referring to a subs pop-under that should (and now will thanks to the code fix) arrive once a month on various home pages and sit under the browser window. It has minimal download overhead, doesn't get in the way until you leave us /forums/images/icons/smile.gif and can easily be clicked out of if you are not interested.

But other folk seem to be talking about what in fact the Red October... banner. Agreed it's been around a few months now and time for a change but we're only going to replace it with something else. As far as the forums go we're not even serving it via a banner server so once you your browser has cached it there is no impact on bandwidth. The downside is that, because we are currently not using a banner server, you keep seeing the same one all of the time...hence I suspect we've reached the boredom threshhold with regular attendees.

In fact you have to give us some credit I feel for keeping the forum area as clean as it is. No rich media stuff is allowed here and we've even stripped out the text news headlines until we get the final phase of our hosting changes in place in order to keep things running as fast as possible.

Whilst you might get attuned to seeing some regular faces around here and we are pleased that many of you are subscribers, our web sites reach into a much broader audience (including people that come to view here) and it is important to us to be able to take magazine subscription orders online. To be able to do that, we need to make it apparent that such things are possible.

Looking longer term one of the thoughts that keeps popping up is whether we can create meaningful online areas that are unique to subscribers. Would hasten to add that it hasn't got past the 'what if and how' stage but at least you can be aware of the fact that we value your custom.

Absolutely appreciated Kim, my only suggestion was that perhaps it could be restricted to the ybw home page and perhaps even the forums page, but perhaps removing it from the index pages for each forum & threads etc could be an option. If the feeling is that by giving it a permanent dispaly boosts subscription sales, then so be it. It's the subs that keep this site alive and we wouldn't want to jeapordise that.

Ta, and apprecviate the suggestion. Actually the way the forums currently structured it's quite difficult to do different things across the various bits of it, again strangely enough to keep the download overhead in check. Once everything at the top is in your cache that's it.

We'll probably go back to serving banners via a banner server again at some stage so the wallpaper will at least change from time to time. Most likely approach for the forum area itself will be to use a little gizmo we've adopted that can sit on our server to keep everything up to speed.

Re: Okay, now we\'re talking the sub?

The problem I have with the pop up. Special offer thingy is. Well first pop ups are just a nuisance so get rid of them as fast as possible. But it does not load right. Or takes for ages, I dont hang around long enough to find out. But all it says is special offer, nothing else and no buttons. So I just use the back button. This some times has the effect of loosing the red flag thingies. Causing more iritation. Now if it was quietly at the top of the screen or where ever. I might even go and have a look at it. But then again maybe not!! I quite like the little submarine. Whats it advertising??

Oh no!! Just had a look and it's the same Special offer thingy. Computer went mad with. SECURITY ALERT Very frightening and worrying.

The bloody thing is still poping up. I even let it load this time. No button to get rid of it so have to use back button. I thought it was only dubious sex sites that did that sort of thing!!

Where are you getting this? What exactly does it say, and is it a pop-up window?
