I see that six or eight weeks ago a narrowboat was taken into Ilfracombe by the lifeboat suffering with a fouled prop.

Out of pure noseyness does anyone on here know where it was actually bound for ?

If it was a conventional narrow boat then in the Bristol channel it was bound for the bottom. Its a bit like driving an electric wheelchair down the M4

Hi there, I did see quite a few in French waterways so the Dover Strait must be possible for them, all orifices welded up i guess ?

These to go on with whilst I try to find the link

Well, i confess I am having trouble finding the link. I chanced upon it following a remark on YBW from someone who had visited Ilfracombe and was asking if anyone knew what had become of the narrowboat - he then gave the link and I an 99% certain it was to the RNLI site. I have had a look and, whilst I recognise a number of the pictures, I can find nothing of the narrowboat rescue. The two piccies above are ones that I saved on my laptop.

Curious.

Anyone got a good conspiracy theory ?

Crossing The Wash from Denver to Boston by narrow boat was a fairly hairy exercise on even a good day!

Not actually been on board but have provided some safety cover in worsening weather conditions. Rather them than me.

Possibly there was a clue in the fact that the recognized pilot was Lou Doubleday (long departed this parish), who was also the local grave digger.

The man who owns the outfit which flogs a lot of boaty toilet gear ( I forget the name) took his narrow boat across the channel but it was specially adapted to do the job. Even then, no keel and a flat bottom!

Many years ago now I was parked on the mud flats just off Portishead waiting for the tide up to the floating harbour and the Lloyds regatta as it then was when a narrow boat attempted to do the same. Ran up the bank onto the mud, and then gracefully slid back into the river. Repeated this exercise four times even using his anchor off the bow - the anchor was a grappling hook on the end of 5 metres of blue polyprop. When we got to the locks into the harbour he went against the wall only to realise that the very short lengths of the polyprop weret going to get anywhere near the top of the lock sides. He was totally ill equipped for what he was trying to do - an accident waiting to happen.

I watched this vessel come into watchet. The older husband seemed...... Less capable..... than the river pixie type wife. He tried to pull the stern in on a 50 ton boat without first wrapping the line around anything. His helm skills needed honing too.....
