Anyone know what the marina(s?) is like?

We're planning our summer cruise coming up shortly, and if the wind is in the SW and we don't fancy a beat down the channel, we may well head up to the Ijsselmeer, and Ijmuiden seems the obvious entry point.....

Question is however, do we reach Ijmuiden and carry straight on to Amsterdam, or stop over the night after a long passage......

or alternatively is it worth carrying on that little further and going via Den Helder?

Neil,
I remember stopping off fo r the night after a race there. Seemed comfortable, and we were moored next to a Corribee from Hull. Just pontoons in the harbour though if I remember correctly. Must have changed by now.
A trip to Amsterdam in the morning was a nice change to the sleigh ride from Harwich. Stopped off at the RNYC before mooching around Isselmeer and Markemeer.

The marina when it first opened was very expensive, although a year or so later when I visited it was very reasonable and pleasant. The holiday village type accomodation next to it is pretty boring, but next to a beach - useful when waiting for weather to come home.

The other side of the lock gates you used to be able to moor next to the wall. Poor facilities but not too far a walk to the local chinese.

Amsterdam worth going for as long as you can get somewhere to moor - Sixhaven gets very busy, although there are other municipal places if you get really stuck, or you keep going into the Ijsselmeer.

Den Helder is a pleasant spot, and useful if you are doing the Fresians. A fair few hours further up though. Took me 40 odd hours from Medway, although rather quicker for you probably.

All these places worth an exploration if you havn't been there before!

there is a pleasant marina just past the sixhaven on the same ( port ) side its really the nxt opening on the port side, its the best place for stocking-up as is is ajacient to a large supermkt , the only real downside is its quite a long walk the the ferry

I went over this year & after the overnight passage stayed in Seaport Marina(& coming home). It has every facility but go well in past the visitors pontoon on the left or it is a long walk to the showers etc.We paid 22.9 euros a night for four of us in my Moody 31..You can continue through the lock down the N sea canal to Amsterdam which takes about 3& half hours.(including lock time). We sailed for about an hour but you are not allowed to tack.Watch out for the hydrofoil which comes up very fast.We stayed at Sixhaven for 3 days(only 11 euros a night)) & they do pack the boats in,but very handy for the free ferries over to the railway station to do Amsterdam. The showers etc are Portacabins with no windows & strange blue lighting but clean & OK.We spent three weeks in Markemeer & Ijselmeer, very enjoyable.Enkhuisen brilliant(have kibbling & chips fron the chippie on the corner). We also went on the Thomas the tank engine train from Medemblik to Hoorn.Great fun. The best book I think is Inland Waterways of the Netherlands by Louise Busby & David Broad.£30 ish but much better than Brian Navin's book.We found chandlers very expensive compared to UK this year. The Dutch chart packs are cheaper at 27 euros & I renewed mine this year as they were 5-7 years old years old.Have a good time.

Sixhaven is the most tightly packed marina I have ever visited, but it is worth the effort for the experience! Cross over into Central Amsterdam by little ferry. The river is very busy with commercial traffic which can't (don't?) always see yachts. Last time I was there a yacht was sunk by one of these with all lives lost, so keep well out of their way.

Have a great time!

Hi Neil
We stopped over in Seaport Marina, Ijmuiden to wait for clearer weather before heading to Belgium a couple of weeks ago.
The entrance is easy to find - proper bouys.
If you call up the HM before arrival they will give you a bit of flexibility like take any box showing a green marker on 'J'.
The toilets, showers and launderette facilities are all accessed using a paper swipe card you get when you pay, which also gives access to the pontoons.
The Dutch Admiral bar above the reception has a nice atmosphere and views over the sea.
There are several other eateries nearby - we had a fantastic Indonesian meal in the Chi-Ling restaurant.
There is no chandlery on site any more but, if you ask in reception, they will phone the nearest one who will pick you up and take you back again (not sure if the taking back is dependent on purchases!!!!)
As for crossing over to Holland, we went straight from Foxs to Den Helder and it took us 23 and a half hours. The KMJC was very welcoming.
Den Helder is a far more interesting place than Ijmuiden.
If you want to borrow newly purchased Dutch Charts and books, send me a PM.
Cheers
D

I doubt we'll spend long there.......

Its a quick stoppover after a long passage.... we may go sit on the beach for the afternoon if we arrve in the morning (and the weather's nice!).... but we'd be off the following day...... Amsterdam beckons.....

my 12yr old daughter already has a long list of suitable destinations.... from Anne Franke's house onwards..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Be careful about some of the other tourist attractions, not so suitable for a young daughter and even younger son!
Friend of ours went dinghying down the Amsterdam canals with his very brother's very straight-laced nephews and nearly capsized when the kids kept standing up to get a better look at the naked ladies in windows.

Indeed.

When I first went there I usually went across the ferry, past the station and turned left as the buildings looked nice. Didn't go too far before the buildings looked interesting for a different reason.

Took me ages to find where the real centre was. Definately an educational visit.

We too are planning to be in Holland at the end of Aug - thinking of Zierikzee - the kids love the mussel festival

We did the passage from Mersea and were very ready to stop over before entering the lock/canals!
When we got to Sixhaven the next day guy in next berth said it was totally full by 1800 .....so we felt fully justified!
Ijmuiden was a good stopover, facilities v good and friendly bar but had stopped serving food on Sat night by 2030 as I recall.
