Ignorant yellow welly Chelsea Yotties in Fowey.

I always thought yellow wellies were supplied to employees for doing grotty wee jobs.

Black wellies for farmers and crofters.

Pink wellies for fashion gurus.

Green wellies were supplied free with every black lab bought buy people with funny voices and very long coats.

Bet he wishes he had'nt said anything...

In short,he was under full sail through a crowded harbour when he really should have been under power.

Cant agree with that bit at all, but I do sympathise with the problem you had. Seems to be common to all racers everywhere.

Mind you, the same comment applies to all wetbikes and more than a few speedboats. Last time I was pottering about Cardiff bay under sail, there was a speedboat / cabin cruiser thingy doing 20 knots or so. Twice up and down the bay then back to his mooring. All he achieved was to waste fuel, pollute the atmosphere and irritate anyone (racer or not) who was trying to sail. But then what else can you do with those things?

You take your life in your hands when you post as a mobo to complain about the actions of a raggie on this forum!!

As you will have seen, there are lots of raggies whose knowledge of the col regs doesn't extend beyond 'power gives way to sail' and apply that in all circumstances. We've had lots of threads on here where the right of a raggie to tack across the bows of a mobo is asserted, usually on the grounds of 'he should have anticipated what I was going to do'.

I have even come across a case of a raggie running down an anchored mobo which was correctly displaying an anchor ball and screaming 'power gives way to sail' as he did so.

The rules are quite explicit on this subject -

17 (a) (i) Where one of the vessels is to keep out of the way the other shall keep her course and speed.

Pretty succinct I think. You may have right of way but you mustn't tack, gybe or swerve in front of the other boat. No ifs, no buts, that's the rule.

BTW I'm a raggie and have been these 48 years.

I remember a case a few years ago when a Scumsail yacht on a corporate day out rammed their committee mobo, sinking it!

I had to smile at the yacht that tried to sail through the fleet of mobos and ribs watching the racing on Sunday. We were heading along the course, just off the marshall boats at tickover to make it comfortable. Most boats were doing the same. This yacht made a beeline for us. I thought he'd tack, but he didn't - so I put a bit of power on to get out of his way.

I'm sure the extra 10 yards he made before the RYA marshall had him turn around was really worth it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yellow Wellie Brigade.

Havn't heard that for a few years.

When I used to race Cowes in the 70s with the Joint Services we had a Yellow Welly award. It was a badge of a yellow wellie awarded daily to whoever had, by popular consensus and vote, made the most spectcular cock up or been the biggest pratt over the previous 24hrs.

Other Cowes week racers didn't seem to see the funny side of it. Can't think why. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I suppose now it would be the 'Go Faster Shades Award' /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Or what are those stupidly expensive gortex wellies called??

Was in Fowey todayn short stay pontoon when "commanded" to move boat a few feet by a very posh voice ,needless to say a sudden onset of deafness! Very unusual as most folks here are great!

I have to agree with the main thrust of your complaint.

The key word is ‘crowded’. I have come across similar problems in Poole Harbour entrance when I have been under engine with a maximum speed of 4 – 5 knots (previous sailing boat) and found it very difficult and potentially dangerous trying to avoid large fast sailing boats, dinghies and the chain ferry whilst battling an adverse 3 – 4 knot current.

Along with the collision regulations, there is also the issue of good seamanship. The sailing dinghies have no option but to use their sails but in very crowded conditions it would be good seamanship for a sailing yacht to use its engine where there is limited room for others to manoeuvre.

Yes! That sort of attitude makes me want to doff my cap and to feel privilaged that I am allowed to use the same stretch of water as someone so important. I always make sure I do the correct "Yes Sir", "No Sir" bit and make certain I am available to jump when told.

Do I bo110x! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
