Re: It ...

...might be the fastest way into compulsory legislation. If boatowners per se cannot organise themselves into groups that government can deal with then there are any number of ex this, ex that and other bored-sat-in-garden-on-early-pension-types who will be more than happy to step in to create a whole new level of hoops for everyone to jump through.

I've made no secret in the past of some of my reservations about the RYA and the way it has gone about doing certain things. I only originally joined as a personal member to get a discount on some loan or other way back. But the way things are shaping up we need them to be more effective than ever now and a strike amounts to withdrawal of membership = problems as there's nothing out there to fill the void as far as I can see.

Serious answer to probably what was a fun question but it certainly made me stop to think about the implication.

Re: Rewriting history

Keep meaning to put this on the pasteboard on my computer, as it is text that gets used rather too often but am happy to confirm that the suspension (closure sounds a bit terminal in my book) was made originally to give us a chance to catch up on sleep after on individual somewhat short of a couple of cans from the half-dozen started enjoying himself massively in the name of anyone else he chose, mostly in the late hours of the night.

The majority of the suspension time thereafter was spent in modifying the original forum code to introduce compulsory registration as a stop-gap. We then got going again, but soon swapped that system out for this one.

Your opinions count Bob!

But it would be VERY nice if you were to get your facts right!

I was posting regularly as Endymion on the old Scuttlebutt for a long while prior to the problems. On more than one occassion I was treated to a large helping of verbal abuse from the buffoon who caused the problems in the later days of the old style forum. Yes, you are of course right, I am an administrator on another forum, but unless I have suddenly woken up in a police state, I believe that Nige, Ken, Mirelle, Violetta, myself and many others all have a right to make comment and have our say here as well as elsewhere.

Why so aggressive Bob? You appear to be the only person with a problem!

From the start.

I started reading, and then posting, here, very soon after YBW started the forums. Kaj Kuusisto was another early bird.

I don't recall having engaged in verbal abuse, but having been on the receiving end of some, I registered on the new forum in the name of my boat rather than my own name.

This forum is a service provided by IPC Magazines. Don't lets abuse it.

And that\'s a straight answer

But I'm at a loss to know what I did that caused offence. I've posted on this board since it started and yes, some (many) of my posts have been daft, some regretted, and some of use to others. At no time have I ever posted to cause offence. I know that there was a time when Karl Askem was in the process of revising the board that a flame war with spoofers started and Karl saw fit to close the board. I was not part of that flame war - If the archives for that period are still intact and the original posters addresses available then you'll be able to find out just who caused the problem - It is my guess that it suited Karl to close the board so that the new format and software could be installed and tested - The flame war reinforced his case.

The offer of a meet, a drink and a sail are always open to you.

Sincerely,

Nige

Re: And that\'s a straight answer

See my earlier post. I closed the forums so Karl and I could get some shut eye. I also insisted that we didn't open them again until we could compulsory register people. Nige, you are in part right that it was convenient to do so but as we proved when we moved to this system we wouldn't have needed the closure to make changes - it was forced upon us by the man with many false identities. The problem was beginning to spread to MBC as well as SC. It was a shame really...it was getting close to unique to find a forum that was totally open to use without registration up until that point. The person that ruined the deal is not here and thanks to that we can run a broad church again. Long may it continue.

Re: It ... (and mainly to the RYA)

Suffit dit. (and what you've just said, says it all in a nutshell what I was trying to say in the first place) ...

To the RYA [Probably should be posted elsewhere, but who cares ...]: Please start to communicate, communicate and communicate. Yes (RYA), we know that you are a members club, but posing as a governmental organisation devoids your independent role ... RYA, it's up to you to choose your cuffs .... With respect, your stance over SOLAS V was yet another RYA also ran.

Translation

In that case - I'll see to it that I'm available on Mondays - I feel sure it would be best if we were both on the filmset simultaneously. Para, my old thespian - will you too be joining us in treading the boards?
We are fairly time constrained regarding this issue and should work to effect a speedy effective and amicable solution as I go on vacation on the 20th of July to Barra and the other Islands constituting the Hebrides.

Not part of the translation: How are things Oh great Cat hunter?
