If you were going to the dark side perhaps because of age/fitness/health which MOBOs would be on your shortlist as most suitable for ex-yachtsmen ?

I went from sail to power and back to sail again.
I had a look at flybridge boats but coming from sail, it just felt too high and I didnt like the motion. I decided on sports cruisers. First power boat was a Sealine s34. It was a bit under powered so I sold it and bought a Targa 34. The targa went like shlt, cruise speed 30 knots and topped out at 40 knots.

When I went to power, fuel was 37p/l. After the red fuel tax, I sold up and went back to sail.

If you are serious about going to power, choose something with selling it in mind.


Strangely enough, I'm planning to sell up and go back to power at the end of this season.

I went from sail to mobo nearly two years ago when I bought a Nimbus 320, which I can thoroughly recommend, and Nimbus boats are the choice of many sailors changing to mobo's.

It would depend on what I hoped I might do with it and where.
So it could be a RIB for diving, a stout launch for running sailing races from, a nice quiet river launch or weekend gin palace.

Well the crew and I (SWMBO) are still reasonable fit apart from arthritis (dodgy knees)which makes kneeling and deck work and moving quickly difficult. Also we would not have the physical stamina to carry on enjoying 14 hour channel crossings when the weather turns nasty.
Don't want to just do day sailing and would like to continue cruising France the Channel Isles and West Country.
The Nimbus 320 is currently top of my list. But what else should I consider ?

Agreed. Depends on budget of course. Many ex yatties go to Hardy yachts (I have had 2 and both were excellent). Also consider Aquastar and Seaward. Beneteau have had a bash at the trawler yacht market which is what people often move towards with their ST series. Whatever you choose be very aware of the quantum difference in fuel costs. Between 1 and 2 miles per gallon is typical.
 
There are some lovely classic boats about. I'm not a fan of the newer gin palace types although the wife likes them. If your going on passages of a day or two then perhaps a higher bow to take the waves. Perhaps a motor sailor would be the best in between choice. I done a job on a fisher a while back and thought it was a lovely boat.

As for the darkside? If the lord had thought that sails were so good he would not have sent forth the Marine Engineer to do his work on Earth! lol
 
Went to the dark side a few years ago now, and I am afraid I'm converted. First Mobo 28' semi displacement 10 knot single, but wouldn't go offshore with one engine. Now gone to a Fairline Turbo 36 twin engine with flybridge and loads of private internal space, but 1.5 mpg is a pricy hobby, but no tacking, two loos, a proper bed, decent heating with hot and cold running water, even 240v at sea if I want.

If massive fuel bills aren't your bag go for non planing or semi displacement e.g. To 8 or 10 knots. Worth looking at are Aquastar 33 or 38, Corvette 32 320 or 340 , Nimbus, Hardy.

I would also suggest you spend some time on the Mobo forum - friendly lot really. Plenty of opinions on any likely purchase.
 
Fuel.
It's not too bad. Falmouth to Channel islands under 4 hours and 370l. Its still a lot cheaper than the fast ferries plus you have your accommodation their.

The thing I missed when I went to power is pottering around and just having a quiet sail in the bay. Fal to Fowey and back £50ish, sailing, zilch!

Power boating is for getting from A to B quickly and sailing is for loving being on the water.

For me, the 4 hour trips to CI and France is worth the fuel costs. No problems waiting for a weather window, leave at 6am and tied up in SSP at 10am.
 
We've looked at a few, but we're not overly sold on the white sneaker looking offerings. Putting my practical head on I'd look at the Kent 33 ...as there is a twin keeler version - and she might take the ground at push which is a good thing on the east coast.

Failing that something like a half-decent fairline squadron would have to do, although I did notice a princess 65 that I really liked the look of. Why not give us a budget and brief?

Subject to the expert input of the forum and my limited MOBO experience what I think I want is.............

I want to potter locally, Torbay, Dartmouth, Salcombe at displacement speeds but cross the Channel planing at 15/20 knts. Be able to go to sea in force 5/6 max. Adequate accommodation for the occasional 4 but be comfortably spacious for 2. No flybridge. Shaft drive preferable twin engine for offshore, as quiet and economical as possible. Some hull under the water for sensible handling at marina speeds. Bow thruster. 5/6 years old max. 29 to 32 foot. Budget £100K
