Must be lovely to have a boat in the med. But I wouldn't do it because I get too much use of my boat here. Last weekend was great for example, and there is never a month we don't go boating.

Is there a med boater who is interested in discussing swapping a week on their boat in exchange for time on my boat here, maybe split over a number of shorter trips or one long one?

My boat is coded, but does anyone know if this is a requirement if no money changes hands?

Maybe someone should set up a " boat dating" website. Maybe there is one I don't know about........

Weather is holding up very well in UK this year..Up to to 16C today in South and blue skies out of window.
Wonder if that american snow will be arriving in a week or two.

The med boaters don't seem to have been terribly tempted by the plan so far.

Hello...

Hello.........................................

Sweden swap??

I was discussing something similar yesterday!

I am currently in Sweden visiting family and looking at Stockholm's archipelago and wondering if any Swede would like to do a boat exchange with mine for a week or so.

Someone should start a website, it's done with houses....:)

16 degrees eh? Sometimes it drops that low here. At night. In January. ;)
Woodie1000 emailed me and said they were on the boat in SofF at the weekend, swimming in villefranche. water was slightly sharp at 21deg, air temp was also 21deg, but very good for ~November

Incidentally, I'm just back from the UK, where among other things I've driven along St.Margaret's bay and the lovely road which goes from there do Dover, where I spent a night in the marina.

And well... You know what? You're right, I'm not terribly tempted! :D

PS: btw, seeing one of these fine boats sitting on her bottom at low tide, even in such a big harbour, was quite impressive!

Personally I find the med too warm and also a bit on the blue side. Also the light's too bright.

Ah, what's the use...:D

Spring and Autumn are the best seasons really in this part of the world. Not too hot, never too cold and (most important of all) not too many pasty faced tourists cluttering up the place.

Ellesar asked about coding. I think it could be done without coding either of the swapped boats, at least so far as UK law and UK flagged boats are concerned. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has other views on this

The relevant law is pasted below in italics. The two requirements for not needing to code are (i) that the boat swappers are friends and (ii) no money changes hands so as to create a profit element (but it is ok for running costs money to be paid)

Regarding (i), the use of a "friends" condition in UK law is very rare. I cannot think of another example. I think that if both swappers say they are friends, no court can find otherwise. It would be important I think for them to meet personally before the boat swap, ie on the morning of the first handover, but that's easy to do.

Regarding (ii), in UK law "money" is different from and much narrower than "money's worth" or "consideration", both of which terms appear often in UK law. "Money" means just money and not any other type of value. In a boat (straight) swap no money changes hands

In conclusion then I think all this can be done without needing to code the boats.

Merchant Shipping (Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport or Pleasure) Regulations 1998, SI 1998 No. 2771, as amended:
[JFM note: In order not to need to be coded, a vessel must on the voyage concerned be a pleasure vessel]
"Pleasure vessel" means any vessel which at the time it is being used is:
(i)
(aa) in the case of a vessel wholly owned by an individual or individuals, used only for the sport or pleasure of the owner or the immediate family or friends of the owner; or

(bb) in the case of a vessel owned by a body corporate, used only for sport or pleasure and on which the persons on board are employees or officers of the body corporate, or their immediate family or friends; and

(ii) on a voyage or excursion which is one for which the owner does not receive money for or in connection with operating the vessel or carrying any person, other than as a contribution to the direct expenses of the operation of the vessel incurred during the voyage or excursion;
