Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on basic overheads, basic equipment needed and things to consider when buying, owning and running a boat.
I grew up on the West Highlands where people drove without insurance, poached salmon and so spending hours on old rowing boats with outboards was done the in same 'laissez faire' way but am now due to return home and wanted to try and get a better (and so more expensive) boat for fair weather trips, fishing and taking my kids across the water to school but do so responsibly and legally!
We have several piers for moorings but also a local concrete slipway. The boat would be kept at the house for 6 months of the year due to the weather I assume.
I had seen a nice, couple of year old MARIAH SC19 for sale but anything similar (or more appropriate) would be considered for up to £12k. We would just like a fairly low maintenance (i.e no sails) would be a nice as a wee run around but don't know if that's a bit of overkill for these needs. I assune boats depreciate like cars, caravans?!
Indeed, I really would need to know - do boats legally need to be taxed and insured like cars or is insurance discretionary as I assume? Are there also legal implications (other than basic consideration of other water users, animals and habitat) but just things I needed to have - flares say, as well as the obvious life jackets and radio, compass etc. It would be for clement sailing.
Any help would be great, apologies if this an oft asked question but I'm just getting to grips with the move and started to look at boats tonight but thought prudence would be a better first move. If there is any particular equipment for shallow waters that would come in hand I'd be grateful
If anyone even had a better idea of an easier or cheaper boat that would also be helpful.
Kind regards
