The floor of my boat is covered with some kind of loose carpet and I need to identify it so I can buy more.

It is about 4mm thick, slightly ribbed, reversible (ie no backing) and it has never needed the edges binding despite being more than 20 year's old.

It isn't stretchable so it's not the sort of stuff you might use to line a hull.

Anyone know what it is and where I might get some more?

If it’s anything like my attempt to match upholstery fabric after a bit more than half that time, you’ll be lucky I think. For a smallish area we used a remnant of good quality domestic carpet and had it bound after cutting to shape – not very expensive. At the time, I did see lots of car carpet materials, which I suspect don't require binding, on ebay (but madame wanted a bit more pile) and there is an ebay guide at http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/The-Complete-Guide-to-Buying-Vehicle-Carpets-/10000000177322303/g.html

It sounds as if it might be similar to the sort of stuff we specified 20 years ago for offices, schools etc. but you need more detail of the texture and weave. Dense usually dark coloured water resistant non woven synthetic fibre? Many of the companies making that sort of stuff then are long gone, Enkalon, Heuga, Cyril Lord. There was Heugafelt and 'something?' cord, (Needlecord????) much of it cut into tiles, but fashion has changed. A more recent non woven product that works well on boats is 'Flotex' but that is thin, dense, smooth and water beads on it, popular in hospitals.
You will do well to match it.

It depends on what you want. I replaced our original foam-backed carpet this year with a rubber-backed carpet from a local shop. I prefer the give that you get from rubber or foam. The complicated carpet for our 34 cost £75 to have bound, including small sections for fore & aft cabins. It sits well and I don't think it will need fixings.

I just recarpeted my Moody 42 with domestic water resistant carpet. The shop had a remnant. I took my old carpets in and they cut and bound the edges for £250. Great job and think i saved a bit. If they only last a few years would be worth it. They look pretty good.
