Identify a Water Strainer

Can anyone help me identify this water strainer, please? FWIW, it's on a Beta 20

The seal (O ring?) for the lid is missing - any ideas where I could get one? Is there anywhere around Southampton that would stock 100mm dia O rings?

In the interim, any reason why a bit of PTFE tape wouldn't keep me out of trouble?

To identify an o ring measure the internal diameter and cros sectional diameter. If the o ring is a bit flat then estimate the average of the thinner and thicker dimensions.

Locative 577 might refresh an old o ring sufficiently to get a decent seal.
 
It will either work or it won't. Since the filter is under suction it should seal itself given half a chance but I don't know the make. I hope that you have more luck in finding a ring than I once did in Cowes of all places.
 
Could make one using some silicone sealant? Cover the mating surfaces with a 'grease', apply a bead of silicon, gently push lid onto strainer, allow silicon to cure then tighten lid.
Hopefully it won't leak.

Wow - who'd have thought there could be so many?
I think it's this one, which has the same label as mine.

It's an Osculati.

Now all I have to do is track down a seal!

You can either get the correct one at a bearing supplier but if the right diameter is not available you can either get a larger diameter O ring of the right cross section or a length of rubber cord the correct diameter and make an O ring the correct size.

The rubber cord is easily cut with a razor blade or sharp knife and then make a butt joint with superglue. It should be able to work out the diameter of the cord and size of the O ring from the cavity where it sits.

A bearing stockist perhaps

For mail order look at people like Simply Bearings

Alternatively buy some O ring cord and make one or two

Seen on asap supplies osculati strainers looking the same. Seals are about £6-10 but the whole new strainer is from £37. Might be safer/easier to go for the whole thing and have the old one as a spare to mess with. Even give them a call as they are very good.
 
If you think it is an Osculati strainer, as sold by Force 4, you could go to their Southampton branch armed with a vernier caliper and measure one.

Then order an o-ring from a firm such as Simply Bearings Ltd.

Or Force 4 might be able to get one for you.

It's difficult to measure the O ring if it's missing. In practice the size isn't critical as it will stretch to fit. Get one off eBay.

Agree, if it is a water strainer "O " ring as it is not critical.

But if it is an oil seal or permanently immersed in sea water the type of material is important.
 
i have the same Osculati one, seems Force 4 just rebrand it to their name too.

My engine overheat alarm came on a few weeks ago, seweed got stuck in the hose to spigot area, didnt even make it into the filter
