We're off for a non boaty holiday week in Yorkshire. What sort of things can you do if there are no boats around?

Re: Things to do in Yorkshire

Um, well, there's bracing walks in the coutryside, quite a few busted abbeys eg Fountains abbey to bore everyone rigid. York is quite nice, there's the whatsit history experience ride and the Shambles is a quaint street. Stump cross caverns is not bad if you like caves, not too spooky for young kids, website is goggleable, mind you once you have seen the website that's about it. Beamsley is nice dalesy village and v top place IF you are quite good at skimming stones cos there are lots of flat stones on the side of the river with it being limestoney. Careful about going to the Strid where suposedly you can step across the river wharfe in one step but all slippy so every year a few kids get washed away, worth missing. Sutton Bank east of Thirsk is a steep hill and has nice views, and is very fine to wham down the 1 in4 on a bicycle. Umm. There's knaresboro but the best thing in knaresborough is renting a rowing boat onj the river which of course not allowed. Was it Ripon you are going to? There is not much there really, I'm not kidding eg ripon website opening paragraph:

"Ripon, North Yorkshire, England dates from the seventh century and has evolved into a english city of charm and character. Ripon is one of England's smallest cities, Ripon is known for its historic buildings and the beautiful Ripon Cathedral as well as traditional customs such as "setting the watch". This thousand year old ceremony takes place nightly at 9:00 p.m. with the blowing of the horn in Ripon Market Place."

Jeez, dull or what! You have chosen an excellent place to ensure that there are no more non-boaty holidays. For example if you had chosen las vegas or paris, then you would never get to go on the boat again.

Americans on quick round-britain coach tours do Yorkshire on the way south from edinburgh, so you can find any southbound service station and laugh at the daft tartan garb that those scottish types managed to floggem.

Hope you have a nice time!

Re: Things to do in Masham

Masham is only known for one thing - breweries. They make Theakston's there, of Old Peculiar fame, three pints and that's the end of the day. Apparently you can watch the beer actually being made. Woo!

I did try to arrange for a few of us to go up there from work once, but the only available coach was too small, and then i found out that the dates clashed with something else, and then I decided on another date but the bigger coach was booked doing something else. Tsk!

yes axshully the railway museum in York is pretty good. Total enthusiasts run the place, and really enjoy starting the engines a bit, or painting things, or moving the trains up and down the tracks a bit or just sitting in the cockpit of the locomotive all day fixing up the the flags! I mean, how sad is that! er...

Re: oh and

i particularly like the info about the sheep fair. In 2001 there was foot and Mouth - so, no sheep, so they had a sheep fair with pretend sheep made of cardboard. Yeah, that sounds about right for our stupid lot, i can see me agreeing to that.

Beware indigenous yorkshire types tho. I was in a pub once with my sis and a total stranger at the bar nudged me and remarked, "phwoar, eh, you seem to be right wtih her!" I toldim it was my sister and er well best not carry on but his line of discussion was not deflected.

Re: Brass, no muck

you bored or somefink?

Wot I want to know is: is Theakston's still a family brewery, I've got a vague memory it sold out to one on the big buoys (keeps the nautical theme) but one of the family failed to toe the family line and started up on his own with the "Black Sheep" brand.
