Ideas for using old charts?

Today I've taken a load of old charts off the boat. Some of these date back to the early 90's and are probably of no use to anyone for navigation anymore. I think the newest is 2005. Quite a few are in good condition and I think it would be sad to just chuck them in the recycling. Has anyone got any ideas as to what I could do with them/who I could give them to so that they go to a better place than a shredder?

Depending where the charts are for you can send them to me, and I'll update mine with them.

I repapered the downstairs loo with my really old charts complete with fixes and lines from the 1950s- Lots of cocked hats in those times especially when using the radio beacons cross channel. They bring a smile and/or questions from folk who venture in and the paper is superior to any lining paper.
 
Sounds like I would spend a while in your loo. Would love to do that (paper loo with old charts) but am not allowed
 
I have an Admiralty chart of the Channel in a frame on the wall of my study - obviously they don't need to be up to date for this purpose. Papering a whole room would be a bit overwhelming though.

I had one which I used as a test surface to find a good purple pen - ink that wouldn't smudge on a plasticised Imray chart, and a tip as thin as possible for doing fine corrections.

Another which came down to the boat in order to test the new Yeoman was properly installed and working, and then stayed there as a surface to protect the chart table from epoxy drips etc during refit.

I've given a couple away to people doing local pottering in small boats. A pair of Imrays for Chichester Harbour and the eastern end of the Solent were going to go to Dan Crane, but somehow we never quite got our act together to meet up and hand them over.

My dad took a load home to practice with, as he's decided to brush up on his navigation by doing the RYA shorebased courses.

The rest are stacked up on top of the bookcase in the living room :)

Heard they make good gaskets for old cars and the like, as they are much bigger than cornflake packets. I must try it sometime.
I am looking for Admiralty: Bristol Channel, S Wales, Ireland and would be willing to pay postage.
 
We wallpapered our bedroom on the barge with charts, was great to be able to lie in bed ad dream of places to go.
A lot of the charts we obtained were places like the approaches to Hong Kong and similar far away places.
 
A friend of mine - the artist Claudia Myatt who does the PBO cartoons for Dave Selby - uses them sometimes as backgrounds for some original artworks. I'm sure you know talented friends who could do the same.

Personally I love looking at old charts. They remind me of how things used to be when you could be 10 miles out from the coast and completely lost . . .

That comes from trying to follow the great circle route from Chichester Harbour to Cowes.
 
Why not give them to the local Sea Scouts for use in their Nautical Skills badge. There is an element of chart work required.
