Ideal Sailing Mug

I recently went sailing with a mate who had the most ideal thermal mug for use whilst sailing. It was a stainless steel thermal mug with a lid and wide, non-slip base. No matter how much the boat heeled over, the cup did not tip over and did not slide all around the cockpit. My friend bought his at the Earls Court boatshow, but does not remember the name of the vendor, and I have not been able to find anything similar in any UK shops or on the web. I've got one! But I got it from a chandler in Cowes, that I don't remember the name of, and it didn't have a box, and there's no manufacturers mark. Sorry!

But if it's any consolation, mine makes a pretty poor attempt at insulation, it's a pain to wash, and it takes up too much locker space. I'd not rush to buy another.

My wife just bought me a similar mug to take across the Atlantic. It is plastic (although they also do stainless steel) has a very wide rubber base and has a closeable hole in the top so no spillages. It is absolutely brilliant and the best news is it cost £5 from a camping shop in Southampton. Most outdoor/camping type shops do them. In fact have just found their website:

I got a stainless ( plastic inside ) thermos mug with a closable lid and a handle which hooks over the top of the washboards for £2.50 from John Lewis - bargin.

We have two pairs of the stainless ones. They perform very well, keep drinks warm for a long time and, as you say, resist slipping quite well. They are on sale in almost every chandler I see, so doubt if you will have a problem finding them. Stowage is no problem, except they don't stack inside each other, as the rubber base comes off easily.

I've bought some stainless thermal mugs with tops from Tesco's - £3.97 I think. Not wide bottomed but a good shape to put in those mug holder things

Try camping shops, I purchased 2 good sized mugs (s/s inside,plastic enclosed insulation outside,hefy handle, snap on lid and non slip base) from Oswald Bailey £5 each, easy to wash and keeps the tea hot for ages

We've a pair of stainless steel thermos mugs about as wide as they are tall, rubberised base, slanting to a modest openning in the top with a thingumeebob bit which stops the tea sloshing out. Keeps the drink hot (really hot) for ages. These were a gift, bought from West Marine catalogue a few years back (before we even had a boat!), not sure that they still do them now though...

recently used plastic insulated mugs with lids, a hole in the lid lets the drink out but it's below the rim so it doesn't feel like drinking from a toddler's training mug. they kept drinks hot for ages and prevented spilling.

they are manufactured by aladdin (nothing to do with the chandleries of the same name).

we have stainless insulated mugs with lids which you have to remove before drinking- nothing lilke as good
