My Fixed VHF has been playing up with the received signal breaking up. It's now completely gone, no received signal whatsoever. I don't think it's the speaker as I get white noise with the squelch turned down. Transmit is ok as I've had it confirmed a couple of times today with the marina we berthed at. Any ideas as to what I may try to fix it or is it bin it time and get another one?

making do with the handheld for now btw

p.s. I thought it may have something to do with routing the antenna through the AIS receiver but tried connecting directly to the VHF radio today with no change, still buggered

I'd first check the aerial or the unit on a different aerial, it sounds very much like water down the wire. That will at least rule out simple things.

Or as said above, maybe a dry joint. My mechanic had a front half spare for my radio, which I just plugged in and cured my problem.

I'd also go with, the get in touch with Icom vote, they have a reputation of being very good about their products.

So would I-I've had them repair a 421 and their customer service was excellent.

If it's transmitting ok, there's nothing wrong with the ariel. In my experience Tx will fail before Rx if there's an ariel fault. You could probably Rx on a coathanger up to a point.

I have to say icom are great people to deal with , my 5 year old 411 died they fixed it f o c and paid the postage back as well. Ask for Virgil when you call he wil no doubt know the exact fault before you even send it.

thanks for the advice. I've just sent them an email via their contacts page detailing the symptoms and asking for help in getting it rectified. I great radio when it was working for the 4 months I've had it so want to get the RX side of things alive and kicking again rather than bin it

Icom are well known for their efforts in keeping older sets going. They have had their head office down in Herne Bay since they started years ago with amateur radio. They have always stuck to that which they know best, radio communications equipment .
Many of the staff have been there for years and suspect the original owners are still at the helm.
Not cheap, but still small enough to get a human being at the end of the phone when you ring for assistance.
Bit miffed mind that the swiss penknife I got from them years ago is now nearing the end of its useful life and they no longer give them away, apparently your lucky to get a tea mug these days.

I whole heartedly agree. Sent the radio in for repair last Tuesday and have received a couple of emails today saying it's been fixed (filters replaced) and done so under warranty so nil charge for parts, labour nor postage. Scheduled to arrive tomorrow in time for fitting back on the boat this weekend. Couldn't be happier with the service received from ICOM.

Got the radio back and not impressed to be honest, I think ICOM have broken the damn thing good and proper. We were in the Hamble and Cowes area and even though I'd set the range to low, it was picking up conversations from Portsmouth and beyond. How the heck are you supposed to use the radio with that much chit chat going on. Come on ICOM, you can do better than this :(

What is the control that sets the range to "low"? Might it be the TX High/Low power?

.

sorry the above post was a tad tongue in cheek. they've done a great job sorting the radio out, works a treat

My Icom Radio in Hythe in the low/medium setting can pick up conversation from Ships in Nab Tower! so yours is still got some way to go!! ;)
