It had slowly become apparent (as I became aware of the decrease in VHF bletherings) that my 3 yr old ICOM M411 had lost ability to receive all but powerful incoming signals unless the squelch was turned right down ie lots of background noise apparent. Having checked all connections, aerial and an alternative aerial etc I was about to try a complete new masthead aerial system as I could not believe this radio could have failed so quickly. Its predecessor (ICOM)was in continual use for 9 years!
I then talked to a friend who had experienced something very similar - good reception when first turned on and then after an hour nothing. ICOM fixed it for free - a 'carrier wave issue' he was told.
So I returned my radio after emailing ICOM (with the symptoms) who said 'send it back'. Ten days later at no charge and with oversight freight I had it back, fitted and working perfectly. Two filters had evidently been replaced. Excellent service!
Googling the problem now with a little post repair info it appears that this may be quite a common occurence hence this post to alert others who may be experiencing similar difficulties.
