Icom electronics question

I have an ICOM vhf with a command mike at the helm. Great piece of kit as many of you will know.
The mic. has one of those curly cables from the mic. to the socket near the helm. The cable cover is disintegrating and I have to frequently put more self-amalgamating tape on it, and it is now more repair than original. Anyone know if the cable can be replaced?

It's easy to buy coiled cable, but you'd need to know how many cores you need, and be able to refit the plug...

Alternatively, buy a replacement microphone complete with cable and plug.
 
I'd give Icom UK a call. My one contact with them showed them to be helpful and you get to speak with someone with technical knowledge.
They do repair work AFAIK.
 
I have exactly the same issue with my Simrad VHF radio. RS components have various curly cables. I plan to visit my local branch for a suitable cable and associated plug.

I wish it did. Mine came back with a fair sized bill - sixty quid or so, roughly half new cable and half labour.
I looked at scrimping and fitting new curly-cord but frankly the mic design and unique plug doesn't make user-repair attractive or for that matter really cost-effective. Still a damn sight less than a new command mic.

I'd just send it to ICOM for a professional and rapid repair.
 
As I've said in other threads, all my amateur radio gear was Icom and so has any marine equipment I've brought.

I've called the UK and USA for various issues, so technical - backlight was sent to me FOC and another time they sorted all the paperwork for importing the radios to the US for customs purposes again FOC.

Certainly at ground level there customer service is great. I would expect tot pay for parts and labor for a repair though.

I think the "free repair" hope for Icom gear stems from one model of HH VHF, M35??, which was initially sold with an inherent defect in the circuitry.
Icom did repair these FOC, often some years after purchase.

I sent an email to Icom uk yesterday afternoon and received a reply in a couple of hours. Yes they can replace the cable and they sent an order form. They estimate half an hour labour charge (we shall see:ambivalence:)

It is going to cost a bit with postal charges from Spain, but it is an important piece of equipment for me and a proper repair is what I want.

Thanks again, and if I remember I will revive the thread and report on the service and turnaround time etc.

Have dealt with ICOM for the last 35 years.
The defective component was an RX filter that was generic to many Icom transceivers, both Marine and PMR.
Icom, if asked nicely have in the past replaced the item FOC.
The radio basically becomes deaf and is unable to receive.
ICOM charges.
Usually involve 1/2 labour, the actual amount invoiced , would not buy you 15 mins in any main car dealers workshops . :)
If they say 1/2 hour they mean it.
A company that is set up to actually repair, not just board swap.
If only some of the other importers could claim the same. Its only when your kit goes wrong when you find out who is who.
