a few weeks ago i posted a note about how to make an individual call on an icom dsc. problem was that after making the call and getting an acknowledgement we were left having to make contact by voice on ch 16 to agree a working channel. i believe i'm not the only one to come up against this.

i spoke to icom at the show. their set had a channel selection screen immediately before pressing transmit. the man on the stand said they had always had this feature.

i wrote to icom uk today and was told i had an old version and would get a free upgrade if i sent the set to them.

I spoke to them today and they said they'd do it in a couple of days. There is also a modification to the M501 radio which they will do as well - the new versions automatically turn to 25W whenever channel 16 is selected.

Its the Icom -M601 will be available in a month or so
I picked a data sheet up at LBS, look to be a nice unit with a decent display and large buttons, even has an option of a waterproof handset with display and controls channel selector and display that can be cockpit mounted - I will be first in the queue to buy one when they start shipping

Absolutely - my last boat had a 503?, DSC and commandmic at the helm. The only downside to the unit what the space required and the need to two antenna. The 601 fixes all that.

I'll be second in line!

Agree with Stingo - there seems to be some confusion here - or I can't read either. According to the ICOM website the M601 is a combined VHF and DSC transciver, but no mention made of SSB.
Anyone any info on a combined VHF + DSC+ SSB unit?
