There was a web page, long gone, where an old MFV with a Bolinder or Hundested had let rain get down the chimney and seized the piston, something like a 12" bore and 18" stroke with a 4ft round flywheel, the guy took it apart and with some hefty lumps of metal and a lot of heat he got it a part, remetalled the crank bearings and got it run. I think the boat was called Lisa Marie, was up north somewhere.

Used to fish next to the Solon, she had a Bolinder which blew smoke rings at times. These engines are just a lovely thing to sit next to while running. Bit like a large cuddly animal.
The late 70s Sabb 10hp is slow revving, so slow that the oil is changed while running.
Time to re-run this, always hilarious

Presumably that's a variable (fore and aft) pitch propellor he's winding back and forth?
Think so. See the comments. Old Kelvin engines had fwd reverse gears operated by a wheel. The brass one i this pic.

On my first sailing trip to Norway that was very much the background sound track. One morning in a still anchorage surrounded by cliffs and mountains I listened to a big one being started. One stroke of the engine - three or four echoes back from the landscape, second stroke of the engine - three or four echoes back from the landscape. Over the next five minutes or more the engine beat gradually increased until it caught up with the echoes.

Sadly, not so many years later they were very rare. A museum up in the Lofoten islands kept one in running order in a shed ashore. They ran it for about half an hour some afternoons. The last time I heard one was a summer evening in 2011, we were anchored in Denmark and an ex-fishing boat with guests on board motored around the bay.

I did a job using a boat with a single lung (possibly two stroke?) diesel to lay navigation buoys in Sullom Voe. It was tricky when the wind got up as to shift from forward to reverse and back again the engine had to be stopped, then restarted with the opposite rotation, by which time we had drifted off position. The engine drove a compressor that topped up a big compressed air cylinder. Compressed air was injected in to the engine to start it.

I need one of those. I could put it on a trailer behind my I Pace, take it to Saddiq Khan’s offices and start it up.

That's exactly right, Fisherman. Every Summer at the Steam Rallies my late Mrs would abandon me next to the steam and vintage engines and go off to the Market Stalls. She knew I would still be there glassy eyed next to some big breathing Traction Engine or Steam Road Roller when she needed to find me again..:p
