I thought that I had seen it all !!

Swimming naked in Greenwich? That's different! :encouragement: :p

Agree your concerns but unfortunately many older boats neither have a holding tank or the room to fit one. :ambivalence:

Even if you have one it gets a bit difficult if you do not have pump out facilities close at hand. :(.

Eh - never heard of anyone using a pump out faculty - that's what the open sea is for. I also don't belirve that a yacht couldn't accommodate a holding tank though it might be less conveniently placed. I just hope those who think that way keep out of the anchorages used by civilised people or get a large cork.

wtf?
what is wrong when beeing naked? In fact I alway walk naked to the bow when a chater boat is approaching me in the anchorange- and my boat is the only one in the bay.
Maybe I am so ugly that they in 99% go away but on the other hand some ladies like to obvserve naked sailors:)

And if it possible I take a shit in the water despite holding tank etc... Little fishes eat it all.
Trust me- greek waters are despite my "brownie" very clean.
Also it is not likely that it will reach your boat behind me in one piece.

Just relax, take your shorts off and be free!

I don't need to walk naked to the bow to get rig of others , I just get my guitar out and started singing , that's does the job nicely .

So moored up on a boat in a river, if you have a holding tank, it's full. What do you do - put out to open sea (how many miles off)? My estimate if on a buoy in the Thames it could be about 100 miles round trip to find open sea?

From personal experience, if you are at anchor in the Guadiana it is only about 30 miles to open water - 10 hour round trip to pump out - say once a week?

Be interesting to know how many boats have holding tanks (a poll?) and how many of those use pump out facilities or find open water to discharge bulk effluent? I understand that if any chemicals are added to a holding tank the subsequent waste is highly toxic and should always be discharged into a pump out facility.

Final thought, just as bears do it in the woods so do cows etc in the rivers and fish/birds in the sea. Additionally, many towns/villages still discharge partly treated sewage into rivers and along the shores. Believe the Sacred Ganges is one of the biggest open sewers in the world but by no means the only one!

So the question - do you have a holding tank (how long before it fills) and how do you dispose of the contents?

There are usually diffferent types of boat toilets for different situations.

River boats / narrowboats which never get near the open sea will have large holding tanks, with or without chemicals depending upon the system, which are pumped out at marinas.

Boats used on or near the open sea may well have holding tanks for pumping out or discharging at sea. Certainly all the sea boats I have ever been on have had holding tanks which have always been discharged at sea.

A boat designed for the open sea which is on the lower reaches of the Thames, or any other tidal river, could presumably discharge the tanks at the height of the ebb tide so the effluent is taken out to sea. No-one of sane mind will be swimming in the lower reaches of the Thames at that time. :ambivalence:

Nothing wrong with being naked but I hope I'm never in a marina with somebody with your filthy habits - you aren't bothered by swimming in crap because it's you who is doing it to others not the other way round. Nasty and selfish - but suddenly realise you are winding us up - and I've fallen for it. Damn.

Glad to say the River Bensafrim in Lagos, Portugal is OK but is only navigable for just over 1mile!
And with the Guadiana running about 500 miles through portugal & Spain to past Madrid there's a good chance of anything coming out of the heads seacock is as clean as what's in the river already ;)

True, in the next life I am going get a degree in marine toilets; never be out of work - or the other! ;)

We are based near Bodrum in Turkey and we have a holding tank. With a full crew it fills in about three days. Our Marina (Port Iasos) also has a cheap and easy pump out facility that they bring down on the pontoon to your boat. So we use this from time to time. In between when we are out in deep water, more than a couple of miles offshore, we have no hesitation in pumping out and giving the fishes a feed. We would never pump out near anchored boats or swimmers!

Last year I have seen a variation on the theme.

Port Cheli. A big expensive French build catamaran is anchored. It is obvious the boat had been in the rocks, lots of damage.
A young German is the new owner, is repairing the boat. A second-hand ( to small ) mast is been installed, a fixed sunroof over the whole back of the boat and a new back beam is been build at the back of the cockpit. On top of that beam, in the middle a sort of a closet. In the closet door a hart shaped hole. The closet looks just like the outdoor toilets we had 50 years ago.

Not a bad idea. You have no toilet that can clog, brake or leak. You win a lot of space in the hulls. Maybe even twice.
Sure that boat will not be an marina boat, probably not even a town quay boat. And if necessary you could always shove a bucket under the hole.

On the other hand, Turkey has lots of pump out stations.

We who ware wintering in Turkey when the blue water Card was introduced know what a scam that was.
Maybe it is better now ( have not been in Turkey for 5 years )

Just one remark : I have never ever seen a big super yacht connected to a pump out. Other rules ?
