If you have enough clearance under the engine sump removal might be possible.

There is a gauze strainer in there with a pipe leading up to the oil pump. The difficulty might be locating the pipe in the strainer as you refit it if access is limited.

If it turns out that its the joint leaking nip all six bolts up a little ... and hope.

Its not a thin steel pressing so its not likely that the sump plate is corroded through

Was the engine exterior oily any higher if so be expecting a leak higher up when its running

Cheers Vic, i'll have to have a really good look when it's running and hopefully it's not quite dead yet. I nipped up the nearest sump bolts and there wasn't much in them, but i'll have a crack at them all next time.

At least the sump's a bit more robust than first thought and hopefully the leak will show itself in an easily rectified place.....yeah right!

I don't think the block's holed, i've had another look and I think that's just a bit of dirt.

We'll see!

Look on eBay for VIROSOL, use it 1 part Virosol to 4 parts water to clean up the mess, then any which is left use at 1 part Virosol to 9 parts water in a spray bottle as a general cleaner (kitchen, bathroom, degreasant, alloy wheel cleaner etc etc..... Virosol is brilliant stuff! :)

No connection just happy user of the stuff.

Used Virosol its very good but be sure to spray the engine with WD40 or a winterisiing fluid after you use it as it strips off all oils and the engine may tend to rust as a result. How do I know, been there done that.

I also used Bilgex which I thought was fantastic at getting rid of diesel smells.

Hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs here but:

Tighten them on the diagonals, opposite corners as follows where each number represents a nut bolt stud IE:

1 3

4 2

Or if 6:

1 6 4

3 5 2

Do NOT GO

1 2

4 3

Or Worse with 6:

1 2 3

6 5 4

I hope this makes sense? its to do with keeping the pressure on the gaskets even I believe...

Best way I can explain it helps stop the problem of getting the last corner on a stubborn Ice Cream/ Tubaware box lid...

I am sure some one will explain better or tell me I am wrong in some way :D

Hi OneSea, don't worry, I asked for the advice and i'm glad everyone's so knowledgeable! I did know roughly about the bolts but thanks for reminding me. I'd just tested the nearest ones to see if they had any give in them and probably should have just gone the whole hog and tightened all in sequence but time was running short and the tide was coming in!

Next time the correct order shall be maintained!

Thanks for the advice though, always much appreciated.
