I just photographed a real nice bloke for the FT... He campaigns a Farr 45 in the Solent with a crew of 12... and flies down from the Midlands on the weekends in his own Beechcraft King Air 300 to join the yacht...

Now this got me thinking... My 5 hour drive down to Plymouth to bounce around with my dog and swmbo on my 10 year of Bavaria 31 is totally the wrong approach..... Really, I need to get a much larger boat, and a airplane.... That just makes so much more sense on every level!

Why didnt I take this approach 10 years ago???

Absoluteloy not PD. Would you really trade in your wonderful SWMBO for the 12 crew?

No, did no t think so.

Farr 45? Solent?

So what does he get out of it that we don't from our Bav or Duf? I can't think of much.

Let him fly... and carry on enjoying the A38... sorry, I meant the Sound!

Richard, no MP I'm afraid..... sounds like he made his money the old fashioned way... hard work!

He won the RTIR in 2006... and wiped out Lewis Hamilton last year apparently........

Sadly, hard work doesn't make money (at least not of itself). There are plenty of people who have worked bloody hard and made nowt.

That's not to say that most people who have made a lot haven't worked really hard, it just isn't enough on its own (and a few people seem to manage to skip the hard work bit and make money anyway!).

If you can't see why a large one design yacht, racing in a fleet of 10, and capable of some rather impressive speeds is fun then I doubt I could explain it to you.

I don't understand the fun in many recreational activities, pigeon racing for example does not strike me as at all enjoyable, but I don't question the motives of how anyone chooses to spend their leisure time.

I think you must be a bit like us .. We keep the boat on a mooring at Ramsholt .. Its great just to go down .. Sometimes we don't bother doing anything .. Few beers in the pub .. Late breakfast .. Lunch at the pub .. Then we may or may not check out the Deben Bar .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

''Farr 45? Solent?

I can tell you as we sailed on starboard in the Solent IRC race on Saturday through the Farr 45 fleet on port going downwind they looked very impressive and a model of teamwork (and big budgets).

I was also just a little surprised that even though we inconvenienced a couple they took early (therefore slight) action to avoid us without us needing to hail which was great - one passed close ahead and one close astern looking very quick indeed. Possibly more spectacular than the average Bav Duf?

I still think I'd have something slightly less grand prix if I had the money! Each to their own eh?

Nah, toys can be fun, but a boat is a boat.

At the other end of the spectrum, these folk in Vietnam came from one of the shanty boats in the background. They probably live on less than a dollar a day, but they spent an hour or so in the evening messing about on the river. I don't really think the millionaire enjoys his boat more than they did.

I'd be very tempted to laugh this off, except that some guys died around here (Devonshire coast) for a lost keel: and it was not a Bavaria. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

There appears to have been a small sense of humour void up here.

Why not at sea yet Nathan?
