We have just moved aboard our new (to us) boat after being boatless since hurricane Ivan last year and we have been able to get wireless internet, just fantastic, actually being about to surf on board. Sorry just had to tell someone.

Congratualtions mate!!

What wireless internet you use? Been looking - it's a minefield, and will it work at sea or do you have to be in the UK, moored?

We are in Jersey and using a provider called Purple Patch. Bought a BT plug in thing and it just started up, brilliant but don't think it would work at sea.

Have a look here for cheap telephone via the internet. We have a wireless internet, faster than any existing ADSL connection in the Netherlands, and use Pilmo for on-board phone. Subscription approx. 10 € a month, but calls are very cheap (i.e. 20 minutes Netherlands-France 0,60 € only) Works well, but depends, of course, on the internet connection. The good thing is, you don't need your computer switched on. The system makes a normal phone ring when you get a call.

cheers

Skype is even cheaper. It's free to other skype users and the call charges are very low.

True, but I like to boycot Skype, as they accepted my credit card payment the first time I bought credit and refused the CC ever since. I have told them of the problem more than once, but their reply is always that there's no problem their side.... In other words: they don't bother to solve the problem. Also, Skype needs a switched on computer all the time. The quality of the sound is at best reasonable...

cheers

Disagree with you. I use Skype for International calls when family or I are travelling. With headset and boom mike the voice quality far exceeds normal telephone connection.

Maybe okay if your a techno freek but most people do want a conversation without the headgear. I know I use bluetooth for my mobile and I have lots of clients who want to use internet phone but without the need to have the PC involved. Also the quality of transmission is variable.
Wireless newtorking very good, provided do don't mind being hijacked, if you dont configure the encyrption that is.

Wireless internet on a boat is great and seems to be spreading rapidly. I think the best kind to get is the one that plugs into the USB port rather than built-in. That way, especially with a USB extension lead, you can move it around for the best signal - on a boat you are often at the edge of acceptable reception.
