Brendan, all my music was run from Media Player on my pc and I got an iPod. You just have to download iTunes for windows and tell it where your music files are and it works fine, synchronising the iPod whenever you dock it.

You can still use Media Player as well when listening to music on your pc.

Just make sure you keep your music files in a separate (non iTunes) folder and manually get iTunes to update from that whenever you add new music.

For around a £1 an album you can download full albums in cd quality MP3 format from a proper website, not a file sharing service. Saves buying the cd's upfront.

We use this IPOD transmitter option at home/car/boat as well, works really well, I don't use my CD changer at all now.

It does take a long time to rip tracks from a CD to the Ipod/MP3, but another way to do it is to buy them online from Itunes or Napster - its not a whole lot of money really, and its much quicker.

Also I am a member of www.audible.com, and for around £8 a month I get to download free one full unabridged book a month to my Ipod, and get lots of other stuff cheap. You can get electronic copies of almost every main book much cheaper than in the shops. So this month just finished Bill Bryson reading his own book 'Down Under' which is far funnier than the written version, great for car journeys, but works well for the boat as well.

I've ranked all my songs, and created playlists, neither of which carry across to itunes (I've downloaded the latest itunes and tried), and I'm not going to spend days doing it again, so no ipod for me.

Here you go.

You open an account and deposit via paypal. You then search by artist, pick albums or inidividual tracks, choose your download quality/file size (I tend to use 192kpbs vbr) and away. It's charged in dollars at 10 cents per mb I think, so file ssize affects price, but at that size it's usually around 130mb an album, so $1.30.

If you're going to dowmload a lot, like I have it's worth installing their download software, as you get select as much as you want, which goes into your "my downloads" section, and then you can fire up their software and let it download them all overnight.

I got an Ipod from hlb for Xmas, its great, one of the best things ever. Yes it takes time to rip your CD's, some of mine were already in microsoft media player, when I connected my Ipod to the PC it opened Itunes, a different media player, and automatically transferred the music across.

CD players now are definately a thing of the past. Mine's an apple ipod cost £200 or so and have loaded my entire music collection on it, and room for probably
same again x 4.

You seem to be the resident expert on all things computery, Brendan! Whilst not exactly an IPod question, I do have a question regarding Napster. I download tracks (via BT Broadband) from Napster regularly and burn them on to CD's for use in the car and boat but the tone seems flatter and the volume lower than a pre-recorded CD. Does the sound degrade when you download a track over the net or am I bolloxing it up somehow which is perfectly possible

You should get a quite high quality of sound from Napster, but then it depends what bit rate you are recording to CD at. If it doesn't seem high enough quality, try upping the bit rate you are recording at (are you using Media Player to burn the cd's?)

check what bit rate you are ripping at as well. Under options, RIP, select 'lossless' for highest quality

The one I have is a Kenwood, problem is it only works with a specific head unit which is a bit pricey. I think the Clarion one is the same. Best off to get the Sony, which works with all modern Sony head units.

There are two options, with or without the display, and obviously difference in price. One supplier here, but worth googling for better price.

I've got 6 lighter sockets. 2 in front, 2 in rear, 2 in boot! - I'm trawling ebay trying to find enough gadgets to occupy them all! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

easy. The ipod bursts into flames and you light the first ciggie from that. Then, you discover the joy of having no sodding music blaring all day, and go back to the ordinary ciggie lighter.
