One of many things that I have never grasped is how to tighten the stern glands on my Corniche.

I just don't feel confident that I do it properly and fearful of over tightening them.

Any tips/diagrams would be appreciated

Easy.
First yous supposed to undo the lock nuts. I dont bother unless there very tight. So put spanner on inside nut, give half a turn, then tuther side. Do same. Look for drips. If drips, do same again. Till no drips. But not anymore than that. Try to keep both nuts equally on thread.

OOHHHH!!!!!!!! Haydyn!!!
I fort yoo new better!???????? never tighten so much that you fail to get a tiny drip of water through the gland, it is the water that lubricates the shaft and packing (to a point) and stops the gland packing from drying and scoring the shaft, or to much pressure creating heat and damaging the shaft.

beers in, brains out, donning safety hat now

Psst, don't tell him but thats why his shaft fell out /forums/images/icons/cool.gif It slowly melted and began to drip out the back. One day he might learn.

Cloth yed. But it will be dripping again within the hour and mines water cooled anyway. Stll, it's better than a sunk boat when the bilge pump packs in.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If they are not disimular to mine on the Broom, manual says tighten until you get one drip very 30 seconds. I hear what hlb says but if you tighten so no drip, you'll not know if they are overtightened will you,........ so play safe as above.

You can always tighetn them again when you return from your next journey.

Nick,

If it's the two stud type then agree with other comments here -- back off the locking nuts and then just a half turn each side, no more, then see what happens. You should get a drip every 30 sec or so...ish. Better to have slightly more than completely bone dry.

Some no nos

1) don't adjust right up tight; you'll make the packing run hot;

2) be careful when you nip up the locking nuts - the stud can be broken...I have seen someone sheer it in half by applying gorilla arms in opposing directions on both nuts...just tweak locking nuts up so gripping;

3) also check studs themselves - they sit in threaded holes in the stern gland body and can come loose, especially if you don't have two spanners of the right size, one for each nut;

4) if you have cathodic protection bonding connections on the studs worth keeping an eye on condition and protecting with grease - exposed to salt water they can corrode and die, which somewhat defeats the point of them.
